GPU crash and come back? after playing games with XFX RX 580 GTS XXX Black Edition

umut255

As I said in the title when I am playing games, screen goes blank and if I alt+tab, the computer comes back to life after 15-20 seconds. When it comes back, I notice that everything that uses gpu crashes including the game, youtube, even origin's overay crashes because it uses a little bit of gpu power. The weird thing is every program except minecraft comes back to life from the gpu crashes, but gpu only crashes when I open a minecraft server (vanilla). Also if I continue to play with the random gpu crashes, it locks my entire pc up in the end and forces me to do a hard reset after that. I am thinking it could be either psu, overclocked ram (133mhz+),gpu. But since you are experts, you might understand which part is causing the problem.

ALSO: When my gpu is under load, my friends say that there is a weird buzzing sound coming trough microphone and it really is buzzing at my side for example when I run benchmarks or play games, it does NOT happen when gpu load is close to 0%.

PC Specs:

Mobo: Tomahawk max

GPU: XFX RX 580 GTS XXX Black Edition

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600

RAM: 2x8GB Ripjaws V 3600 (oc 3733mhz)

PSU: FSP500-60AHBC 500 watt

Also I am using avast antivirus if you wonder which one I am using.

antivirus is generally useless

You shouldn't run your RAM above 3600mhz(1800mhz * 2) because the infinity fabric clock can't go above 1800mhz on Ryzen 3000.

Did you just buy the GPU?

If not a clean install of windows usually fixes any software issues, or install an older version of the driver if you updated it recently.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Generally with an soc bump you can go a little higher to 3800 if you set the ratio to 100:100

“Since you are experts” kind of dries off everyone but the least cautious.  I’m not even close to an expert, but I got the basics of fixing stuff and I’m incautious.

the easy way to test that is to undo the overclock and see if the problem goes away.  If it doesn’t it’s not the overclock.  If it does it might be some knockdown effect from the overclock if it’s not the overclock itself.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Remove the memory OC. Test.

Remove XMP. Test. At this point, highly likely solved.

So far no crashes, I will update you tomorrow (7 hours later) I will leave Apex at main screen since it takes the gpu usage to 100% anyways it was the game which crashed the most.

I think that it fixed after disabling overclock. Bummer :/ I will update you if it happens again.

So not the OC. What’s next?..  alt + tab is an interrupt. The software is locking but the machine isn’t crashing. Could be software.  Bad install of some background thing that crashes maybe.  What all is running when this happens?

Hey, I have the same graphics card and had the same problem in 2 different computers. This seems to be a common problem with this card with few solutions.

First of all, I re-pasted the card. The factory thermal paste was poorly applied and dried out after 7 months.  This lowered my temps by 7 degrees C.

Here is a note on XFX's website stating that they do not void warranty for breaking the sticker if you live in the USA/Canada.

"Can I service my graphics card myself without VOIDING Warranty? For USA and Canada, you can service the graphics card yourself, piercing warranty stickers will not void the warranty. This includes replacing thermal paste, and cleaning out the fan/heastinks assembly of dust and debris. IMPORTANT: Any accidental physical damage to components on the card however will not be covered by warranty, servicing the card is only recommended for PC Technicians and other IT professionals. Please take care when servicing a card, components can be sensitive and delicate."

Now on to the solution that worked for me:

I tried all sorts of other "solutions" but this was the only thing that worked for me and it has made the card rock solid.

Just a note, I did have problems with the Radeon Wattman software keeping my settings so I switched to using MSI Afterburner to manage the fans and voltages.

Hope that helps.

Do you know what might cause a problem with the card on displayport causing black screen on the dp screen for 1 second and coming back? It just affects the displayport screen, it does not happen with my other monitor which is connected via hdmi. I can't use 2 screens because of this. It becomes black after 3-4 minutes after start, then gradually decreases until it becomes impossible to work on which is black every 2-3 seconds. I have had the screen go black after 2-3 second mark once then switched to my main screen on hdmi instead of dp. And I am not using the other screen currently. When I switched to the other dp port on the gpu it reset the mark to 3-4 mins and now I have just plugged in the monitor back to the dp. I was using a hdmi to vga adapter btw.

Also thanks for sharing this ❤️

Unfortunately the problem came back and its worse. It does not even finish one game anymore. Is there anything that I can do about it?
