That's an X470 bro.

So bigger bios chip more often but not always. Same problem.  Usually just the really old athalon stuff got pulled and even the ryzen one stuff got left on.  I got no info though.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

If that's a 1600AF chip, it may very well need a bios update to support it. The board covered everything up to 2700X, but the 1600AF was released much later than the board and Zen+. Probably why the Cpu LED stays illuminated. This is my guess here.

I like it.  Board could have been sold “ryzen 3000 ready” so who knows what it has.   Can the thing update a bios without a cpu or will happyfungames need to be arranged for?

Max board.  It was written right there but it didn’t penetrate for some reason. Argh.  Says it has the 1600 and 3950 bios on it.  My suspicion is bios isn’t the issue.  I could be wrong though.  1600af came out after 3950

I do not know if his board supports AMD flash back option which allows the update of bios without a processor installed.

The other option:

Short Term Processor Loan Boot Kit

AMD will offer affected and qualified users (as described below) an AMD Athlon 200GE Processor, including thermal solution, for short-term use ("boot kit") to perform the BIOS update on their motherboard.

This short-term processor loan or boot kit is offered through AMD warranty services and is available only for qualified users that:

  1. Have made a valid purchase of a 3rd Gen Ryzen™ Desktop Processor and;
  2. Are unable to boot that processor because the user’s current X470/B450 BIOS must be upgraded first.

This service is free of charge with the following condition:

Once you have submitted your claim for a processor loan boot kit, AMD will require pictures of your 3rd  Gen Ryzen™ Desktop Processor and AMD Socket AM4 400 Series motherboard, which clearly shows the model numbers and unique serial numbers as well as a copy of the purchase invoice(s) to authorize the request. Additionally, a summary or copy of communication with the motherboard manufacturer is requested to indicate why support from the Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) is not suitable.

Once the RMA request is approved, the AMD Athlon 200GE processor will be sent with pre-paid return shipping. The processor is provided as a temporary loan to you for the sole purpose of updating the BIOS and must be returned within 10 business days of receipt. It is not necessary to return the provided thermal solution.

To obtain the boot kit, please carefully follow these instructions:

  1. Go to the AMD online warranty claims page: https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/warranty-information/rma-form
  2. Fill in your full contact and product details (3rd Gen Ryzen Processor OPN number and serial number)
  3. In the Problem Description field enter "Boot kit Required" (without quotes)

NOTE: The product must be a valid AMD processor with authentic OPN and serial number.

Once the claim is received and approved, confirmation details and boot kit instructions will be provided in a follow up email.

you guys are saying a lot of words I dont know

Heh.  That happens.  I like weird words.  There’s a heated discussion going on about whether your motherboard bios has the code in it to make your cpu work or not.   Also about who is the bigger idiot which I am “winning” (By being a bigger idiot)

Low but non zero chance the motherboard needs a bios update to work.  You’ve got to have a fairly rare and hard to get version of the 1600 chip, and the motherboard would have needed to have been built in a short window before the chip was available.

Or the board has just been sitting on the shelf.

Also like to add that the 1600AF was released AFTER Ryzen 3000 series cpus.

The 1600 AF model was released after January of 2020. The 3000 series released in June 2019.

The bios is actually more likely to need an update than not if the chip is indeed the AF part number.

If the cpu is a 1600af it will have the letters “af” at the end of the serial number.  This is actually a really good thing if you’ve got it because it means it’s 12nm not 14nm and is a lot more like a 2600 than it is like a 1600.  The bad bit is the only way I know to check is do it like a puppy: turn it over and look.  So it would need to be pulled from the board, have the TIM removed, and the serial number read off the top.  AMD processors are famously fiddle about having their coolers removed.  The pins are supposed to tear off if you do it wrong.

Need a picture of the topside of the chip if the part number is not located on the box.

YD1600BBAE

YD1600BBAF

It's going to be one of those 2 part numbers.

That's the original part number released in 2017. Which that board would/could/should post right up.

  • YD1600BBM6IAE is an OEM/tray microprocessor
  • YD1600BBAEBOX is a boxed microprocessor with fan and heatsink

Here are the OEM and Boxed Full part numbers of the 2017 version

This is the part number of the Pinnacle Ridge which is what the AF actually stands for.

YD1600BBM6IAF

Save this list I provide for you here and now. Good for referencing!!

8. Codename and core stepping
AB Bristol Ridge / Bristol Ridge PRO
AC Stoney Ridge
AE Summit Ridge, stepping B1
AF Pinnacle Ridge
FB Raven Ridge, stepping B0?
GU Zambezi, stepping B2
HJ Trinity / eTrinity, stepping A1
HK Vishera, stepping C0
HL Richland, stepping A1
JA Kaveri / Bald Eagle, stepping A1
JC Godavari, stepping A1
KA Carrizo / Merlin Falcon / Brown Falcon

The bios does not have the micro code installed to operate the processor.

I am sorry for that information.

Do this. It's free, only costs you nothing but time.

  1. Go to the AMD online warranty claims page: https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/warranty-information/rma-form
  2. Fill in your full contact and product details (3rd Gen Ryzen Processor OPN number and serial number)
  3. In the Problem Description field enter "Boot kit Required" (without quotes)

You can view more information if you scroll up and see my post with the "how to".

I suspect within a weeks time, you'll have this rig up and running.

Or you could spend the money on a 200ge, but they are about 75$.

Or take it to a local PC shop and see if they have a cpu you could load or they could just update the bios for a small fee or if you're cool and bring some cookies, they'll hook you up and do it free of charge.

Good luck my friend.

Kewl.  Those chips are so nice and hard to get they went from $89-$149 in a few months.  Doesn’t solve the bios thing though.   The question is which bios versions MSI did for that board that support the 1600af.  It might just take a standard 1600 bios.  I don’t know.

Here is the exact bios file that supports the 1600AF.

Needs to buy or get the Athlon 200ge. post it up. Update the bios.

shut down clear cmos and install the 1600AF and all should be good.

It's the only way.

I fixed the link. I refreshed the page mid upload lol.
