Less FPS than expected on fortnite!

Hello guys!!

I have an i5 6600 paired with strix 970 and 8gb 2133mhz.

I'm getting a solid 58-59 avg fps in Heaven Ultra! And getting nearly 60-70 fps in fortnite at 1417x900!

My GPU is used only 30-40% in fortnite but my cpu is used 80-90%!

I know that game is trash but is there anyway??

An i5 6600 is about as fast as a Ryzen 2200g.  Likely you are having a CPU bottleneck.  What is the task manager, and logical cores of the CPU showing during gameplay?

Shouldn't be the case with a GTX 970.

 

What Fortnite settings do you use?  

Is it 1 x 8gb stick of RAM you have?

Do you run discord or any other apps in the background?

Bruh!! I use all low settings and have a single stick of Ram and just msi afterburner for a custom fan curve and lgs runs in background

CPU bottleneck as I suspected.

 

All CPUs work better with dual channel - meaning 2 sticks of RAM populating the correct DIMM slots on your motherboard.  Though Intel is less impacted by this in gaming, than Ryzen it still is an impact.

 

The only other question I have, as I am surprised it cant (the cpu) drive a GTX 970 no problem - what OTHER tasks are going on in the background?  Virus/malware/programs eating up your resources at the same time?

That's what I'm confused!! Gtx 970 should not be bottlenecked by i5 6600! And I just run lgs and Msi afterburner in the background!

Well, yes/no.  An i5 6600 sounds great on paper, but in reality is a marginal gain over say a i5 3470 (10-13% faster)

 

Id also run Malwarebytes to ensure no other bad actors on the PC doing things it shouldn't.  The thing is, Fortnite only uses 2 cores/threads - so having all 4 maxed out says something else is going on.

 

Are you running on a HDD or SSD?

I'm running on a HDD (7.2K rpm)

And Also my games are crashing sometimes so I have to reinstall the nvidia drivers is it related to that?

HDD is likely part of the problem here as it is an online game.  When you have a low amount of RAM and VRAM and a new sprite shows up on an online game, you have to then spool up the HDD to find it, and then enter it into the RAM.  If the RAM is full, the OS has to decide what isn't important, dump it and make room for this new sprite (graphic).  

 

Still shouldn't have all 4 cores maxed though.

 

As for drivers, I would use DDU, to clean the system of drivers, then reinstall and see if that fixes the problem.

Should I do a clean windows installation or DDU would be the move go!

I regularly reinstall my OS, about 1 time per year, as soon as I see performance issues. 

 

However:

 

1.) Are you sure you aren't overheating the CPU?  Pegged out at 100% on all 4 cores on likely a bone stock cooler cant be good (intels coolers suck ass)

2.) I would seek to run an SSD, and games on an SSD (especially online games) - heaven runs well because its loading up what it needs and needs nothing else during its run.

Okay bro! I'm sure I'm not overheating my CPU it's around 60-65°C while gaming but 100% usage!

What is your RAM allocation look like during gameplay on both the GPU and CPU?

Basically I think you have some virus or malware, due to the 2 cores being 100% utilized beyond what the software your running requires.  So your GPU is getting only a little information that it gets to only work 30% hard as that is the amount of time the CPU is giving it to build frames.

If this were my PC, and I am a gamer:

 

Benchmark my HDD to ensure it was performing as it should (crystalmark free software)

I would run Malwarebytes (Free)- whether it yields results or not I would next:

Open Task manager and watch my CPU usage, what is utilizing my CPU when idle

Do the same when under load (gaming in Fortnite)

If I see something suspicious I would then google that thing using my CPU

Depending on the return results would dictate whether I could cleanly remove this from my system or do a fresh install

 

But since I have things at my disposal what I would do if I wanted this fixed now, and know that my hardware is good, no temp issues etc:

So if Malwarebytes caught some bad actors, it doesn't mean it got them all or the worst of them.  What is your HDD usage at in Task manager idle, and during gameplay?

5% at idle and 50+% in game

After using Malwarebytes I'm getting an increase in fps tho!! But not that you would expect from 970! I'm around consistent 100 fps everything low on 1417x900!

So if its at a constant 50% while gaming, that means you have a bottleneck also, elsewhere - what is RAM utilization and VRAM utilization (GPU) during heavy load (gameplay)

Check other launchers like Steam/Origin etc are not set to run as soon as you boot your PC.

Alright! This is what I'm facing right now!
