Was this a notification toast (popup in the bottom corner), or just the badge on the notification icon?

Just the badge displaying a "1".

And in the notification list, were any of the notifications bold?

In that case, the most likely explanation is that a notification was created for something (for example someone liked your post), and the notification badge was updated to reflect that. The notification was then removed (eg they removed the like), but you loaded the notification list before the number got updated on your side.

It persisted for about half an hour.  During that time the listed notifications never changed.  No actual new notifications were listed.  I'd imagine I'd catch someone's like at least once in the notification list.  Though that sounds like a great way to gently troll someone.

Did you change your computer's time recently?

I do appreciate that you're giving this so much of your time, but I feel like I'm wasting that time.  I won't be offended if you'd like to move on from this.

I was hoping that this would be a known thing, but it doesn't sound like anything that I've been aware of in the past. Without being able to investigate it as it happens, I don't think I'll be able to figure out what's going on, but please do report if it happens again.

Daylight savings just begun in America a few hours ago. @nick name your computer's clock would have automatically adjusted for daylight savings.

You know that's probably the culprit.  My PC hasn't changed its clock yet and that may have caused some weird server/client issue.  @colonel_mortis was on the right track.  Good catch @Spotty.

Hmmm, I wonder why my PC hasn't changed its clock yet.

And perhaps creating a thread somehow synced things up server/client side?  I'm totally talking out of my ass here.

More likely it just happened to be an hour after you first visited the site, so the existing cached notification count finally got invalidated and updated with the correct value.

Game Show Host:  Judges?

Judges: *nods*

Game Show Host:  We will accept that answer.  Control of the board remains with @colonel_mortis.
