Question About Drive Caching

Then it doesn't matter as you are limited to the 1Gig-E Network..  So you won't be scrubbing through mass amounts of 4k footage very quickly.

 

Your only other option is an external drive based on Thunderbolt 3 (best), or something that offers USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbit/s).

 

Both options need to be equipped with NVMe storage for best performance.

I can tell you I did a speed test recently with a USB 3.1 Gen2 cheapo external M2 drive, and a Samsung 970 Evo 250GB drive in it.  But it got hot, so I'd recommend a unit that comes with a fan in it.

Hello guys, I am not new to PC building, but I am new to creating cache drives. 

I was wondering, for drives that I wouldn't be using as cache drives, would I need to turn off caching?

So if I had 2 hard drives that would serve as just storage, and an SSD I wanted to use for cache, do I need to disable caching on the storage drives? Also what is a good rule of thumb for cache drive size? My girlfriend will be using lots of 4K footage and has about 16TB of storage space she will be using, so what would be a good size cache per TB?

What OS?

 

Where is the main storage?  On PC, External drive, or on a NAS? You gotta consider the total workflow.

 

Caching doesn't work for a video editing work flow really.  Its really best for repetitively reading commonly accessed datasets (games, booting, apps).

 

What you really want is either to have ALL your storage be super fast NVMe if budget allows.  And if budget does not allow, just enough storage to use as a working disk for the job.  Then manually move the job back to slower storage.

Home PC: Apple M1 Mini, 16gb, 1TB, 10Gig-E.  Adobe CC and Ripping things + Daily stuff.

Gaming PC: Ryzen 7 5800x, 32GB, Nvidia RTX 3080Ti stuffed into a Corsair 380T.

Asgard the FreeNAS Plex Server: AMD EPYC 7443p 24 Core, SuperMicro H12SSL-CT Mobo, 256GB DDR4 3200mhz, Norco 4224 Rack Mount. 100TB+ TrueNAS Core.

The OS she is running is Mac OS. Main storage will be off of a NAS running FreeNAS. She uses her Adobe programs quite a bit, and she has quite a few plugins, and presets. Might I add she is running a laptop, and with apple you can't just upgrade your drive (I hate apple lol). So I will pretty much be making the NAS just so she has more storage space for those large files.

Wow that's pretty fast.

Yeah I have a cache on my personal PC. I have 2x4TB 7200 drives, that cache to a 250GB Intel SSD. But I never knew if I should turn of caching on the HDDs, and just let it be handled completely by the SSD. 

But I will definitely try it with the Thunderbolt 3 external. That also seems much more cost effective.

Exact same drive mounted internally.  Look at the speed differences.
