1080p or 1440p?

So my PC specs are: R7 1700, RX580 8gb, 16gb 3000mhz ram. My question is: should i get a 1080p 144hz monitor or a 1440p 60hz monitor?

That's a really personal choice. If you're strictly gaming I'd get the 1080p display.

144Hz has a big impact on gaming, that would do nicely.

If you're mainly playing games I will strongly suggest the 144hz, for some gaming and a more of a browsing type of guy 1440p all the way.

Option 3: 1440p 144Hz.

 

Either way you slice it, 24" for 1080p, 27" for 1440p, and 35" for 1440p Ultrawide goodness.

Stay with 1080P for that graphics card.

Depends on Size, quality, the Monitor, what games you play and so on.

 

In General: IPS/PLS >>>>> TN.

You should avoid TN whenever possible!

Eh, if you're playing really fast-paced games and need the shortest response time possible, TN is still a valid option. IPS hasn't caught up to it yet.

Response times are so much faster than people can even pretend to react in their best Matrix dream... any is fine.  

 

All this 1ms 240Hz playing in 640x480 to get the 1337 killz is such snake oil.  Unless it's your job, of course. Getting paid for video gaming = do it.

 

Reminds me when Minecraft kiddies would brag about 500+ FPS.

I game with a wireless mouse, so clearly I'm not an expert on response times. But then again, some would rather go overboard to make sure it isn't an issue than go with good enough.

 

Although I do agree modern IPS response time is low enough for the majority of people to not notice.

Really depends on the actual monitor, a lot of IPS monitors have a lot of backlight bleeding issues.

 

Even the high end ones.

 

Not so much with the TN monitors though.

 

Check the reviews before buying.

But then again the TN have shit color space, dithered colors and a god awful viewing angle/image stability.

 

There ain't no free lunch and all TFT Technologys are pretty shit compared to what it replaced wich had other issues (flickering, size, pwoer)...

I used to be all out IPS but a good TN really isn't bad these days. Of modern systems I only have one poor TN panel, which is on my budget gaming laptop. Colours are ok, but the vertical viewing angle is very sensitive and a bit of a pain to get in the sweet spot. At home I have 24" 1440p 144Hz and 28" 4k60 TN displays, and colour and viewing angles are not a problem on either. That's not to say they're as good as a good IPS, but it is more than good enough for gaming/web stuff. I wouldn't write off TN just because it is TN.

 

Back to OP's question, as others have said, it depends. Are there 75 Hz 1440p in budget that could be considered? I think it makes enough of a difference over 60 Hz to be worth looking out for, and the higher resolution can help with general use. Even better if FreeSync.

Not all TN's have color issues, yes IPS is better most of the time as far as colors go.

 

Depends on the actual monitor, you really do get what you pay for, pay shit prices and you get shit in the end.

 

Good high quality gaming monitors are NOT cheap, but then they tend to last for a very long time so it's an investment. I still have old LCD's that are over 15 years old and still work and that is something to think about before buying. Cheap out and buy a shit monitor and you will have that same shit monitor for a long time. All the while kicking yourself for not getting a better one when it was bought in the 1st place.

 

Looking at the reviews is important.

 

A monitor is an investment like I said, much more than the other parts of the PC as they last forever.

I did order a new gaming monitor to replace my one that is currently in the shop for warranty work, sound problems.... Acer Predator XB1 XB271HU abmiprz 27" (TN Panel)

 

Ordered an ASUS Republic of Gamers Swift PG279Q 27". (IPS Panel)

 

Will use the ACER on my other gaming PC once I get it back.
