thepriceyman got a reaction from leadeater in Best practices for AD Domain Network?
I would put in place DFS and have Roaming / Redirected folders in place on both servers means that if one server goes down for some odd reason or another the other server will stay alive and keep your shares working.

thepriceyman got a reaction from TheBitFighter in Upgrading an old HP ProLiant ML350 Gen5
Hi There!
ML350 Gen5's are pretty ancient hardware in terms of servers - I had a ML350 g5 a few years ago and it was suprisingly good!
So the server in itself can have a theroetical 2 CPU's however you would need the identical other processor (meaning you would have to buy the identical one that is already in there - also you would need to buy a PPM module - yes correct but I dont think that is the right one - I would have a look through Ebay for the correct one.
As to server software I would put VMWARE ESXI 5.5 (the free version) on it then you can host multiple virtual machines on it for the seperate applications / servers
Server uses a special type of DDR2 ECC memory meaning you have to be picky with the RAM you get as standard DDR2 will not work! (max ram is 32gb even with 2 processors unlike newer HP servers)
I wouldnt bother with SSD's on a server you wont really notice the difference generally you would fill up the 8 drive bays and give it a RAID 5 or something like that
heat sink : http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Proliant-ML350-G5-Heatsink-and-Fan-Assembly-413977-001-/310727618786
cheaper to get it on ebay again!
The server will have 2 onboard GIGABIT ethernet ports + a ILO4 port which stands for Intergrated Lights Out port esentially you can remote onto the server and remotely configure things such as BIOS, view the screen remotely configure RAID pretty much anything going in there.

thepriceyman reacted to alpenwasser in Best Home Sever OS FreeNAS or Ubuntu
All functionality on my server goes through VMs (Arch guests via KVM + QEMU on
an Arch host), and it has saved me from quite a few headaches. Snapshot the VM
image before updating, update, if everything goes well, delete the copy, if
not, rolling back the VM is as easy as a copy-paste operation. And on the host
itself I run a minimal amount of crucial packages and custom configs in order
to minimise the risk of something going wrong on that end.
Has worked quite well so far.
My experiences with Arch host + Arch guests have been very good, but indeed
not every system is suited for this, as Vitalius mentioned (and I'm pretty
sure such a restriction also goes for other dedicated NAS operating systems,
though I haven't looked into it specifically).
If you go for a more generic system and then specialise it for NAS
purposes you're less likely to be bound by such constraints though, but then
you'll likely need to invest more time into setting up your system; probably
not going to be plug-and-play like with a simple specialised NAS operating
system. I remember spending quite a bit of time figuring out how to set up my
server so that everything was to my liking. To me it was worth it, but that's
a decision everyone will need to make for themselves.

Thought about using a power to ethernet?

thepriceyman got a reaction from Jonny in VPN over port 80 or 443
Personally wouldnt use OpenVpn - I would use a program called SoftEther https://www.softether.org/
Install it on your home PC and open up port 443 / 80 on your router (whatever you want to use)
and then install the client on your laptop then configure it to connect.

Agreed with forum member above - windows firewall should be sufficient - and then anything open to the internet you can close your ports on the router / open them dependent on what you want.

Update 1 displays the close and minimize buttons on Metro apps now.And honestly, I'm not really annoyed by Metro. Go for Windows 8.1, it's newer, is supported longer, has built-in USB3 support and lots of other stuff.

thepriceyman reacted to Slick in Why isn't there a section for MAC?
Then don't buy them. I'm not trying to make you buy one... I have never owned an Apple product other than ear pods which were given to me for free(no, not even an old school ipod... I had a Creative Zen). Apple is a leader in build quality and they have shown more than once that many companies(in certain sectors) will be happy to produce sub-par products unless there is a quality front runner. Competition is good!
Then there are the people that simply want Mac OS - Again... this is not for either of us - but there are people out there that like the feel, the design, the hand holding style, etc... it doesn't matter if you can't justify it for yourself, it's not for you
I could go on but I hope you are able to understand at this point and I'd rather get back to other things

Follow the link in my sig, install the script that redirects the forum's search function to Google, it works much better and there are also several other things (like a nice custom theme) for the forum that you may enjoy to use.

thepriceyman got a reaction from Sauron in Video Game Idea's
I am well aware of the peoples views in the forum! I shall therefore not put microtransactions in it (seeing as that would require us to buy a whole load of stupid servers ) and leveling up wont be required either (more programming hassle) we will just keep it as like quake as we can (without infringing copyright ofcourse! )

thepriceyman got a reaction from MikeTz in Rasberry Pi B+ Gamestreaming
added to that Steam is completely closed source! and not in a lifetime is Valve going to change there mind about that... I mean what games are actually programmed to run on the ARM chipset? especially ARMv6 a bit outdated... Running Quake 3 is probably its max - I havent seen anything more challenging graphics wise for the Raspberry Pi?

True. I use it as you said for browsing the web and one note at school. It's brilliant other then the battery life. As for valve games, I haven't tried any. I may have to plop Portal 2 on it and try it.

thepriceyman got a reaction from Shelden iHardware in New Audio Setup for YouTube
If your wanting audio clarity I would just go with a condencer mic : http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-C-1-Studio-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B000CZ0RLK/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1408038218&sr=8-4&keywords=condenser+mic
with a pop shield (any will do )
also getting a mixer will probably do nicely as you can play around with the EQ settings a bit so that you can remove certain frequency's that you may not want.

In this case, think about an AM1 build, since you can run that with an external 19V Power supply. Those are available with a cigarette lighter plug, so you don't need a bulky 12V-230V converter.
EDIT: I have to correct myself: AM1 is not compatible with 19V external PSUs. I suggest you use an pico PSU instead
