2 dorm room network

Go to solution Solved by Mbarton,

oh thanks for the info man. but we definitely need a wireless network on our room. I have a spare router lying around. If i connect that to one of his lan ports and to our router's wan port. Would that work as if I am directly connected to the internet through my router? no more setup. needed(aside from MAC cloning)?

Exactly just plug a wire into one if his LAN ports and plug the other in into your routers WAN port. and thats it.it should all work from there.

So my friend has a router, that is connected to the Internet, in his room. He is a floor below us and to the right. We share the connection, but the wireless signal in our room is too weak. I'm looking for a device that can be connected to one of his WAN ports then goes to up to our room. That device then will be where me and my roommates are gonna connect to to have a better signal.

Do we need a repeater or an extender?

Sorry guys I'm kind of a newbie when it comes to networking. :).

Thanks guys and gals.

Help is really much appreciated <3.

How are you going to get a Cat5 cable up one floor?

something like this might work, you can also got ones that on the reciving end start a new wifi signal. I use them in my house :) http://www.scan.co.uk/products/tp-link-tl-pa411kit-av500-mini-powerline-adapter-starter-kit-twin-pack?utm_source=google+shopping&utm_medium=cpc&gclid=Cj0KEQjwm6CgBRC0zOmrydrqmosBEiQA_xoLRjyJuhXonSg5lVeZcqoenCWje5RAD5jfPmX6lQr9MvgaAh0s8P8HAQ

You definitely don't want to use that at a dorm.

Get him a better router. A floor up and to the left should not be a problem for anything decent.

.

We're on the same side of the building, we were thinking ic it is possible to run a wire through his window to our window. #linusghettotips

I think his room and our room are on independent circuits, so that wouldn't work.

That might work if you get a outdoor rated cable.

Edit: this should work. http://www.amazon.com/Outdoor-Waterproof-Ethernet-Direct-Shielded/dp/B002HFEBYM

But what end device will I use on our room? An extender, repeater, etc?

well if you wire a cable from his room to your room r you can get a switch. and connecting that to your computer if you want to go wireless you can wire that cable to a new router or get a extender/repeater (which are the same thing.)

Wifi extender if you want to go wireless wich also has etherrnet ports on the back :http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-WN2000RPT-Universal-Range-Extender/dp/B0089E2FZC/ref=sr_1_7?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1409845827&sr=1-7&keywords=wifi+extender

A switch if you want to go wired (i prefer this way is faster and more stable:http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-SG1005D-1000Mbps-Gigabit-Capacity/dp/B000N99BBC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1409845934&sr=8-3&keywords=switch

I  have GameServer`s And VOIP servers the only price is that you have fun on them.
