Are you Jerry Neutron? I've been watching your content for ages, I remember buying an XFX RX 470 after watching your video.
I might move to a beefier tower style cooler but considering I have a basic B350 board with a basic power delivery system (MSi B350 Tomahawk), I doubt my OC will be much better, but at least the PC will be quieter. Thanks for the help.

that idle temp is fine considering what you mentioned

the Wraith Spire is OK for mild overclocks or chips that can overclock on low voltage but I just tested about 6 coolers with my Ryzen 5 1600 and even a $35 single tower cooler was a solid improvement over the Spire

I'd go for the SeaSonic M12II 520W Bronze EVO Edition or Rosewill Hive 550W in that price range

You'll have to pony up an extra $10 bucks or so if you want 600W+

What's up guys. I just wanted to start a build log on my PC as I finally move away from a budget build into a high-endish Z97 build. This will be primarily used for video editing, gaming and hopefully some GPU benchmarking.

I'll be capturing my build and benchmark process on video for you guys to see but for now I wanted to post a few pictures of each component.

    <link removed>
^^^ In this video I talk about my reasoning for each part selection.

    Parts list is below:

    CPU - Intel Core i7-4790K

CPU Cooler - be quiet! Dark Rock TF

    Motherboard - Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 5

    RAM - 16GB HyperX Savage 1866MHz (2x8GB)

Storage - 240GB HyperX Savage SSD

Storage - 1TB Seagate Barracuda HDD

    GPU - MSI Radeon R9 290X Lightning

PSU - be quiet! Dark Power Pro 11 850W

PSU Extension Cables - Bitfenix Alchemy Black

Case - Phanteks Enthoo Pro White

Thanks to HyperX for supplying the RAM and be quiet! for providing the PSU!

I will say, two things I wish I had for this build were a black mid-tower ATX case and full replacement cables for the PSU. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get any help with that but I think the build should still come out pretty clean.

What do you guys think of my part selection? Build video and pictures coming soon!

Indeed, I use an external Blu-Ray reader that's connected to the main PC.

    RAIDZ2 is a funny thing. You're getting almost 22TB out of a 10-drive 30TB pool, I'm barely getting 21TB out of an 8-drive 32TB one.
That's 1TB less usable space with 2TB more advertised space. Go figure.

Which is not a bad thing! Linear means more focussed. I don't understand this obsession with open world games, it just means everything becomes more diluted, scattered and lacks any form of pacing. "Ooohhh the world is going to end, let me first find all the parts of a sweater for little tiffany".

I'd love some more linear AAA games this year, don't care much AT ALL for these open world games atm. I never finished skyrim, because i got bored.

Ok. I did a SLI guide and now time to do a vRAM/memory bandwidth guide. A lot of people seem to be confused about vRAM in general. Well, here we go.

Let's clear up some misconceptions about vRAM!

What does vRAM size have to do with gaming?

Bonus: What happens if I don't have enough vRAM that a game asks for for certain settings?

And now resolution, Anti Aliasing and operating systems

    And now about multiple monitors

Now, onto memory bandwidth and memory bus and such. You may wanna skip this if you know already and are only here for the vRAM size portion above, but I might as well be thorough if I'm doing this. Spoiler tags save the day!

    vRAM types & memory clocks

Next, memory bus and memory bandwidth!

Extra: Memory bus + mismatched memory size section

And the GTX 970 gets its own section! Hooray!

    FAQ

    Windows 10 and nVidia 353.62

    Final tidbits and stuff

I started writing this guy mainly for the top section, to denounce misinformation people seem to have regarding vRAM and its relation to memory bandwidth, but I figured I might as well just go the full mile and explain as best I can about what most people need to know about GPU memory anyway. If I've somehow screwed up somewhere, let me know. I probably have. I'll fix whatever I get wrong. And thank you to everyone who has contributed and corrected things I didn't get right! Unlike my SLI guide, much of the information here was confirmed post-writing.

If you want the SLI information or the mobile i7 CPU information guide, they're in my sig!

Moderator note: If you believe any information found in this guide is incorrect, please message me or D2ultima and we will investigate it, thank you. - Godlygamer23
