Thanks for confirming what I thought about the USB interface being the limiting factor.
I checked my computers and the fastest I have are USB 3.1 ports. I hardly think the Nvme drives would be faster in these conditions.

Apart from the size, a regular SSD in a decent enclosure would do just fine. It will already saturate the USB interface. The extra speed of nvme goes to waste in most cases. In my experience, Sata based SSDs run cooler, which I would assume is better long term. External nvme drives, even with a passive heat sink on them, will get really hot on writes, that's why there are cases with small fans on them. However that adds to the cost of the product, which could otherwise be spent on a higher capacity for example.

Depending on the enclose you get, the NVMe drive should be a bit faster. In practice though, the main difference is just the size, and since costs should be about the same either way I'd just get the NVMe setup since it's a bit smaller and in theory faster.

    1. Shooting in 4K/6K/8K/12K and 12-bit~16-bit RAW won't magically make your videos more interesting.

    2. Shooting people walking in slo-mo over a (stolen) sad music doesn't make a video "Cinematic".

Silence should be more valued than low temperatures. I don't care if my R9 280 runs at 85C or 25C. What I do care about is how loud it is.

Motherboard in both the Z1 and the SFF use custom motherboards and non standard psu connectors. A normal ATX/mATX motherboard will not work

I used to do this all the time, usually with the old silver box Optiplexes. These mostly came from yard sales, and were occasionally in really rough shape. I can think of exactly once that one just up and died on me, and that was a matter of a dead PSU that wasn't worth the cost of replacing. Workstation PCs were (and still are from Dell and Lenovo) built to last, because they always came with warranties for the companies buying them. The last thing Dell wants to do is send out technicians to replace hundreds of motherboards at no cost, so they use better components in building them.

I mean if they have a warranty you shouldnt have to worry about if it stops working for a while

First of all, there seems to be three Mini-ITX boards available on Newegg that have Thunderbolt ports built into the back panel, and one is a TB4 motherboard with a Z590 chipset, while the others are TB3 with Z490. https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?N=100007627 601333829 601361682 601361698&cm_sp=Cat_Motherboards_2-_-Visnav-_-Intel-400-Series_4 Or alternatively, you could get any motherboard with Thunderbolt support and get a Thunderbolt PCIe expansion card.

Though, unless you already have an Intel processor for this setup, I don't see why you want to get an Intel motherboard. Alternatively, there are a few AMD boards that have TB3 support (either having their own ports on the back IO or supporting expansion cards) and there is one Mini-ITX board that has a back panel port, the ASRock X570 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3. https://www.amazon.com/X570-Phantom-Gaming-ITX-TB3-Thunderbolt/dp/B07VXYYG7F
For a list of other AMD motherboards with TB3 support, there's this list here, https://linustechtips.com/topic/1233452-amd-motherboard-that-supports-thunderbolt/

Of course.  It will still use a little bit of your CPU, but most of the work will be done on the GPU.  Unless you play with the settings, GPU encode will usually look worse than a similar settings on CPU encode.

Larry Philips got a reaction from r2724r16 in Mac egpu: 30bit colors? different type of cards? I’m lost...
    Hi,

I have a few questions about the current situation with thunderbolt egpu, and I hope some of you will be able to help me sort things out.
Already found conflicting info on the internet, and also for conflicting infos from local Apple stores, so I’m really lost.

First thing first: can I get 30bit colors using an egpu even if
    1) the Mac doesn’t support 30bit colors out through thunderbolt (eg: the MacBook Air)
    2) I’m using a consumer-grade graphic card, such as a Radeon RX 5700

    The chain would be: computer—>thunderbolt 3 egpu—>display

Under Windows, no choice, one must use a professional graphic card. I was wondering if the situation was the same under MacOS since Apple provide their own drivers.

Second question, more to satisfy my curiosity than any real plan: can I use a egpu consumer graphic card and a egpu pro graphic card with the same computer, such as a Radeon RX 5700 and a FirePro?

AMD told me it doesn’t work on Windows due to drivers incompatibility. They were very vague about the Mac.

    Thanks a lot
    Larry
