WillOfTheLand got a reaction from da na in We need a law to stop scalpers.
The only way this problem ever gets solved is via legislation, an actual act to stop scalpers. Now I may be drawing some inspiration from Louis Rossman but we all know bureaucrats aren't going to do anything unless we get the ball rolling. So who's with me? The first thing we have to do is come up with a draft, a proposal, a idea for a law that would effectively mitigate scalpers without causing harm or issues for anything else.

If even a handful of these see the potential for some good PR and join on it could significantly boost the Verified Actual Gamer program and the amount of cards available.

WillOfTheLand got a reaction from da na in Worst Tech mistake you have ever made?
Using compressed air to clean out the fans and heatsinks on my media PC that files I had no other copies of on it including very dear pictures that can never be had again among a plethora of other things, without anchoring the fans in place so they wouldn't spin while the air passed through them.

Turns out if the fans spin without being actually powered they can build up a slight charge, enough to cause issues. Upon booting the PC after I was greeted by no display output and after leaving it for half a hour with still no display and hitting the power button to initiate shutdown it still hadn't shut down another hour and a half later, at which point I made the call to hold down the power button and do a hard power off, to which I was greeted by the sound of the HDD screeching as is grinded to a halt.

That said (and this was a complete idiot move) I wanted to see just how bad it was figuring I'd wrote off the drive, I powered it on again and surprisingly it booted up just fine.....It just somehow was lacking ethernet drivers, and upon trying to restart again it just failed to boot, not the drive in total, but windows itself would get part way and fail, even safe mode you would see loading up modules only to see it crash about 2/3 the way. And the drive didn't sound the greatest when this happened.

So it's been powered off and the media PC has just been sitting aside ever since, the drive at least isn't completely total'd and probably mostly recoverable as it's probably just a bad sector that was made even worse by what happened (the fact it booted once at all would indicate the heads are fine at least, and most of the platter), even enough that if was recovered and you ran startup repair on the clone it'd probably fix whatever is missing and boot, but data recovery is expensive, even from the cheapest companies, so it's just going to sit there as a reminder to stupidity.

Always hold the fans still if you're cleaning with compressed air.

    https://games.slashdot.org/story/21/06/27/0246252/is-a-sony-ps3-leak-now-leading-to-banned-consoles

"Every Sony PlayStation 3 ID out there was compromised, provoking bans of legit players on the network," Threatpost is reporting, calling it "just the latest in a shocking spike in attacks on unsuspecting gamers."

tlhIngan (Slashdot user #30,335) shares Threatpost's report:Sony reportedly left a folder with every PS3 console ID online unsecured, and it was discovered and reported by a Spanish YouTuber with the handle "The WizWiki" in mid-April... Now, several weeks later, players on PlayStation Network message boards are complaining that they can't sign on and are receiving the error message 8071006. After enabling two-factor authentication (2FA), one player was able to sign back in without issue, according to posts on the PS3 subreddit, which includes a link to instructions on how to opt into 2FA on the PS3.

It appears threat actors have started using the stolen PS3 console IDs for malicious purposes, causing the legitimate players to get banned... Sony has not responded to Threatpost's request for comment or confirmed a connection between the PS3 ID breach and player reports of being locked out of the platform...

Sony is hardly the only gaming company leaking data like a sieve. A report from January found a half a million credentials stolen from the Top 25 gaming companies on caches of breached data for sale in criminal marketplaces. In June, the "Battle of the Galaxy" mobile game leaked 6 million gamer profiles, and attackers are working out how to use gaming platforms like Steam to host or deliver malware.

Looks like sony is getting their way on killing the ps3 whether people like it or not.

Personally I'm of the opinion not until 2027, manufacturing can't be ramped up any more than it already is until new fabs are built, assuming we build enough fabs to counteract the high demand it will still take 5 years or so to build the fabs, you then need time to build the chips and fill the inevitable backlog of chips that will have already been on backorder for the countless products that require them.

Prefacing this by saying to people don't make this political (hint don't make comparisons between countries, don't mention Canadian politics).  The following is just discussing ramifications of C10, if passed, on Floatplane.

My assumption is that @LinusTech , or rather someone at Floatplane has already thought about this, but what will happen to Floatplane if Bill C-10 is passed?

From my understanding of bill C-10, it could classify Floatplane as a broadcaster (https://www.justice.gc.ca/eng/csj-sjc/pl/charter-charte/c10.html)
This would be a bit worrying, as the CRTC requires Canadian broadcasters to have a certain amount of Canadian produced content.  I don't know the specifics of C-10, but it would be great to hear an opinion on someone who knows better, or works at Floatplane as to whether C-10 might affect future services.

From my thought on it, would it start requiring it to have subtitles on everything, reducing the American content (or at least requiring for more Canadian content)...or worst case, I wonder if it could mean a higher rate as they would have to end up paying into the pool of funds that the CRTC collects for creating Canadian content.

Anyways, thoughts or incite would be great

Linus mentioned the LTT kids books on the WAN show and it gave me a idea, it would be interesting to see if the community could put together a (tech) kids book.

Obviously it would never be sold, but just like a way for the creative part of the community to flex their creativity. People who are good at writing could do the text and people who are good at doing art/drawing would do the visuals. Like a different person(s) does every page sort of thing and it all comes together into a single book that people can just be like "yeah I made part of that".
