Dr_badwolf got a reaction from The_Misanthrope in PC is still unstable after testing with stress test
Look into GPU Bios editors.
GPU Ram is the same as DIMMS.
Just the settings are harder to get to.

Dr_badwolf got a reaction from Giganthrax in What's the problem with .deb files?
Theres nothing wrong with .deb files.
debian's package manager (term = dpkg) will invoke apt-get (that software store) to resolve dependencies.
There are PPAs and 3rd party repos - some include whatever updates to whatever software "deb" youre installing.
you can install a ".deb" without worry, there will be no conflict or issue.
The worst case is merely it not installing.

Dr_badwolf got a reaction from LurkAndLoiter in Linux Noob Looking to Test Out Linux
Linux Distro = Ubuntu.
- Reasoning: Large support base of devs and users. Use IRC Freenode Ubuntu Channel (my preference) or Stack Exchange.
Non-3d/Gaming apps = Use Wine.
Here's what i do to set up Ubuntu Linux to run "All the basics" ill do this in steps.
1.) boot an ubuntu disk, created with Rufus USB. (easiest USB creator)
2.) install to an Extra disk. (a spare SSD works nice)
- If you boot in UEFI: It will take over the Bootloader and show your windows boot in a list on boot.
3.) Installation is pretty "normal" you will understand each step pretty well.
- just make sure when you select "erase disk and install" you dont accidentally erase your windows drive.
- You can tell it to "install next to windows" it will resize your windows partition.
________post install__________
4.) you booted normal and at the desktop: open the "terminal" (ctrl+alt+t) or use the "windows like: Start Search" with your win-keyboard-key (aka: Meta)
- win key --> Search "terminal"
- it will always prompt for password when you install something (the equiv of windows "admin popup screen dim UAC"
5.) the command "sudo apt-get"
- a.) apt-get is an app in Ubuntu/Debian
- b.) this app installs apps from an "App Store"(ish)
- c.) sudo means "Do something as Root/admin" thus "Do as admin" + "apt-get"
- d.) thus ["sudo apt-get install ____"] means install a thing.
6.) what to install with apt-get
copy the following into terminal window
sudo apt-get update && install synaptic preload vlc wine playonlinux winetricks
That will install synaptic, a more advanced way to search the "store" which youll want later.
wine is the app that will let you run EXE... "normally"
playonlinux is a helper for wine.
VLC just because a media player is something i always install.
preload because it makes everything load faster.
and winetricks is a thing that makes wine do more things (you will need to look up how it works. but its actually quite easy.)
Youll find that anything thats "Not Games" will run flawlessly on linux.
Youll find that "most games" run flawlessly on linux.
Very few things require "hacking*" to run correctly.
When you get curious, you will break linux
-------- AFTER YOUR FRESH INSTALL --------
I recommend backing up the linux partition with PARAGON Disk Manager.
You can save the partition to img.
and just overwrite it.

Dr_badwolf got a reaction from Henrik M in Need help building a CPU-beast
SQL work is easily clustered.
Id build a stack of Thunderbolt daisy-chained clustered micro-atx.
Or you can get a ton of RPI4s and 2.5Gb USB ETHs
toss them into a 10G switch.
Parallel gonna do you better with Sequel.
sry "SQL*"

Ya, I know all this - Those thermals don't actually matter tho.
Im sure you know why...

Dr_badwolf got a reaction from Longsh07 in GPU or CPU first? - 4790K + GTX980
My opinion...
--- Bleeding edge Workstation CPU first (not server)
-- Price vs Performance threshold on GPU. (cheapest of the fastest)
Why?
Because the only Video Rendering tech that can saturate GPUs right now - is BAD RENDERING (this is why some games kill GPUS: Garbage processing that does nothing)
Sure, I have a conspiracy theory that game devs are being paid to do this, but... i won't go there.
Turn off the useless "Optimizations" like RTX, oversampling, post processing, etc... And youll get your 60/120/240 FPS on a Mid+ card.

Best Phone
Is best.
EDIT: Still Works
You could take the battery out of these things and power them via USB.
This is the first phone i installed [Ubuntu] linux on.

Dr_badwolf got a reaction from Sawtaytoes in 2 gamers, 2 GPUs
Beyond that issue (really should have just kept writing)
... Hardware sharing: Mice and keyboards are fine, so long as they dont require system-wide drivers.
Some gaming hardware requires exclusive system calls.
Those require admin to be an HID.
The sound system technically works.
but its splitting the Audio calls into software, which lags you.
Then you have how windows renders the desktop window manager.
So youre splitting your GPUs between each other in wierd ways.
Cause if you have 2 unrelated GPUs... youre still cross rendering OpenGL.
This takes up both cars, and sucks frames and frametime.

Dr_badwolf got a reaction from Bombastinator in Random PC Shutdown
Take out the GPU and test it.
and if you havent an extra - race to the "Enable RDP"
Then shutdown.
Turn on without a GPU, and connect using RDP on Android (or apple, if you must...)

A Phenom is a Phenom.
Not even the chinese can fake that.
You would have to do a thermal test to find its limits.

Dr_badwolf got a reaction from Dreadnought in DDR4, Ballistix Sport vs Hyper X Fury
Forget everything you know about memory
- - - because im about to lay down the holy grail...
MEMORY!
is like Graphics cards: You know, how theres many brands but few GPU manufacturers.
The general rule is...
1 Single chip PER DIMM module = Faster
but...
Multiple CHIPS per DIMM module is easily possible... but they end up being slower because of ranking...
The more CHIPS the slower
because the Memory controller has to work harder to error correct those chips
SO!!!
Always look for the fastest SINGLE DIE - - - PER STICK
if you want to get the FASTEST possible.
Heres a link you can learn and google off of

Get the cheaper one or the one with a better warranty.
If they are both B-die then it really doesn't matter which one you pick.
