if amd draws less power and runs hotter this time around im gonna be mildly disappointed, at least ill be less surprised when reviews come out 👌

Wanted to give you all the juicy details. So again can't say how I know but AMD runs Hotter then new Intel. It looks like new Intel is going to be slightly faster then AMD for single core (gaming) while AMD will beat intel in multicore. Intel is going to be priced higher then AMD, and thunderbolt will be on more AMD boards. DDR5 runs excellent on current AMD 670x, Intel may release with the current chipset for 690 then release 790 later.   October is when Intel is coming Intel ARC is still coming out a few weeks after Intel as they don't want to overshadow 13th gen

I'm with you 100% on this. I'm gonna try to use my current setup for a long time. I play older stuff and esports games that run well on a potato. I have no need to upgrade, but I know how I am and if something new comes out and I can actually buy it I probably will.

Officially, I will stick with my 10900kf until I get a GPU that bottlenecks it (5000 series, likely I'll skip 4000)

In reality, it will depend on my willpower to not get the latest and greatest

Yeah, i heard ppl say that, but i didn't believe it because it didn't make sense to me  - but after this and hearing about the decoupling thing i believe it...

It already has been released  - i have no idea why tho...theres like no mobos / cpus supporting it (i thought)

it happens every ram cycle, i wanna say ddr5 could be the worst on launch but that has to be recency bias. i wonder when ddr5 will become available. At least now we know why amd pushed next gen back for a year and is going with a refresh, at this point a zen 3 refresh does look more promising.

11th gen already had some funky behavior and 12th gen does further improve ipc, i expect big bugs but they will be squashed. a year...or 2

I'm going to stick with my AM4 platform for awhile. So far it does everything I need it to and if I run into CPU limitations I can easily upgrade the motherboard+CPU, and if I really need more GPU power there's always the Titan Z.

Yeah, they have decoupled memory speeds from memory controller speeds, there are 3 modes, 1:1, 1:2, and whatever is in the picture, to support higher frequencies...which always adds latency each, apparently...
    Seems weird to me.
    (^as far i understand)

But yeah, maybe RAM manufacturers will be able to fix this?

Right , I mean take it with a grain of salt obviously,  but that's what I found out doing some digging... high latency, poor gaming performance...

Sure that could be bugs being squashed before release,  but with intels track record how likely is that? The whole big little concept seems risky, great if it works (maybe?) but what if not? : o

DDR4  Alder lake = not worth it from 10th gen Intel i5
DDR5 Alder Lake = most likely too pricey at 2021

But yeah, waiting for it just to see what happens.

My plan is to take the 5900X I recently bought and ride out the storm of CPU improvements that the next few generations will bring. I'm expecting Intel and AMD to trade blows and push advances in features like back in the Athlon days. Perhaps some ARM or RISC competition will enter the fray. I figure in 4 or 6 years, the dust will have mostly settled, and then I can upgrade to whatever CPU line has emerged as the new Sandy Bridge. A 12 core Zen 3 chip might look like a potato compared to Intel 15th gen or Zen 7, but it should be good enough for the forseeable future considering it has about double the total CPU power of the consoles.

@Mark Kainejesus, intel's amd now... also i remember seeing all core drawing north of 300w, duration limits doesn't matter to me, and what are those timings LOL

Tldr: seems mostly a ddr5/latency issue,  or in other words as they put it, intel lol. 😆

With price being no object you could pay a company to design one.

But otherwise there would be absolutely no reason for a monitor to be wireless and not connected to the actual device generating the image and be 144hz

You would need one hell of a battery in order to power that 😄 But why?.... Kinda stupid idea, but hey. If you don't want any cables at all then that would be a perfect monitor for you.

This, don't by into a dead platform. Either stick with a new intel mobo/cpu, or switch to amd. That GPU BTW is also isnt going to push a whole lot more FPS than what your getting now regardless of CPU.

Fell into some cash and forgot this drop was coming. Might look to snag a 5800X tomorrow at microcenter to pair with my 3080. Didn't realize B450 boards weren't going to work until Jan 2021 at the earliest, so looks like I am in the market for a new motherboard as well.

5950x to replace 3950x which then goes onto a new B550 mobo (Asus B550F gaming).

Finally retiring my old Phenom II 1090T (at 4.0Ghz) from active duty.

Based on AMD's past release cycle. The new threadripper cpus usually follow Desktop CPUS by about 4-6 months.

No, why do you say that? The 5960x is still Ryzen. I would normally go for the HEDT because of the motherboard IO, core count, and PCIE lanes but the 5960x has plenty of what I need and also very fast core clocks. Which things like Premiere and AE actually benefit more from than more cores.
