ErrystioT got a reaction from Hiya! in Is buying gaming laptop a good idea?
With the series of GTX 10 Pascal GPUs on laptops, they're now at least head-to-head in terms of graphical performance (only about 5-10% performance difference between notebook version and desktop version) so I believe performance shouldn't be that much of an issue if you travel a lot and need a somewhat powerful machine. However, battery life takes a hit powering those components, especially if they don't come with switchable graphics capability (the ones with G-Sync capabilities mainly) to switch between iGPU and dGPU. Only a few number of gaming laptops have quite a long battery life such as Gigabyte Aero 14 (has GTX 1060 and a whopping 94Wh battery) and Dell Inspiron 7567 (up to GTX 1050 Ti with 74Wh battery).

Avoid these, Razer laptops have poor internal quality, poor QC and poor support. MSI GP laptops have mediocre build quality and overpriced

Gigabyte Aero 14? Though it's pretty steep in price, but has a whopping 94Wh battery that can last you about 7hrs of normal usage. There are not many variants of 13"/14" laptops with a GTX 1060 and they're not cheap mostly to get when bought new. You're pretty lucky getting your Alienware 13 at around £1000 with GTX 1060.

ErrystioT got a reaction from genexis_x in I am shopping for a new laptop
Budget option, Dell Inspiron 7577, it's got i5-7300HQ (has i7 option as well which is also HQ version), GTX 1060 6GB Max-Q and ThunderBolt 3 with full 4 PCIe lanes support. If you want something like a convertible that also let's you take notes with Stylus Pen, Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 370 is a pretty good option, it's quite expensive but it also has ThunderBolt 3 with full 4 PCIe lanes support. Though be wary that the ThinkPad Yoga 370 comes with U dual-core processor (7th Gen). While it might be sufficient for most games, it will suffer when playing open-world games as it can potentially bottleneck the eGPU performance (around 15% drop).

ErrystioT got a reaction from genexis_x in Looking for a gaming laptop
If u can stretch to $600 and live in USA, there's this (http://www.microcenter.com/product/487700/aspire_5_a515-51g-503e_156_laptop_computer_-_black). Acer Aspire 5 with i5-8250U (new 8th Gen Kaby Lake-R), 8GB DDR4, 15.6" 1080p and MX150 GPU.
The MX150 in it should be able to help running the games you mentioned comfortably at 1080p and the 4-cores in i5-8250U should help as well in some games (miles better than the previous 7th gen i5-7200U)

Acer Predator Helios 300? The 15.6" version goes for $999 on Amazon and packs a i7-7700HQ, GTX 1060 6GB, 16GB DDR4 RAM and 256GB SSD. No HDD here but it can be installed separately if you have a spare internal 2.5" HDD. Though if you don't have a spare, a 1TB 7200rpm sets you an additional $60 ish. Which slightly goes above $1000. Regardless though, this is one of the few laptops that's just below $1000 with a GTX 1060, a heck of a deal.
There's another model that's recently released, and that's the new Dell Inspiron 7577, for about the same price as Helios 300, you get i5-7300HQ, GTX 1060 6GB (Max-Q Design), 8GB DDR4 and 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD (I think it's 5400rpm) combo. The main advantage here over the Helios 300, is the ThunderBolt 3 support with full 4 PCIe lanes (40Gbps theoretical speed) which can be really useful if you're into eGPU.

What's the usage for the laptop? I'd say refurbished ThinkPads are the way to go

ErrystioT got a reaction from genexis_x in Best well built laptops for schools
ThinkPads are pretty reliable as well. They're built like tanks and I think it's good for educational usage as well, even though it's mostly marketed for business users.

Although the CPU is better on the Predator, Thunderbolt 3 is a pretty good thing going for the Dell. I'm going to check the two of them, thanks a lot!

At this point of time, I think it'll be better to wait for more 8th Gen Kaby Lake-R laptops to be available. Or if you need it soon, there should be deals for 7th gen laptops as holidays are approaching.

Thanks Man! This summary is legit
and yeah, budget is not a constraint. I believe I can filter this out

ErrystioT got a reaction from BananaBaconFries in Laptop Recommendation that allows at least two(2) storage options
Budget? If budget is not a constraint for you, here are a couple:
- Lenovo Legion Y520
- MSI GS43VR (One of the few 14" that has 2 storage bays)
- MSI GS63/73
- Lenovo Legion Y720
- Acer Predator Helios 300 (need to contact Acer for the 2.5" SATA bay and SATA cable or buy your own according to some people)
- Acer Nitro 5 (same story as the Helios 300 for the 2.5" SATA bay)
- Acer Aspire 5 (again, same story as the Helios 300 for the 2.5" SATA bay)
- HP Pavilion Power 15t
- Asus ROG Strix GL502
- Alienware 15 R3
- Alienware 17 R4
- Dell Inspiron 7567/7577
- And actually many more....
Normally gaming laptops have the multiple storage bays option but those are the ones that I know of (there's more that I can list but I think you can find it easily through quick Google )

You probably want a 7th gen HQ i5 or KB-R i5. The laptop chosen by @ErrystioT is a decent choice.

Closest I could find, (http://www.microcenter.com/product/481563/nitro_5_an515-51-56u0_156_gaming_laptop_computer_-_black). Acer Nitro 5 with i5-7300HQ (dat's quad-core btw, not the ULV version), 8GB DDR4, GTX 1050 4GB and 256GB SSD

ErrystioT got a reaction from ianspy1 in Everytime I start my Hp notebook I have to wait like 10 minutes for the desktop to load
Time to upgrade to SSD bud. $100 can get you 200-ish GB. Your HDD combined with that CPU (or should I say, APU), makes for very low performance. SSD should help boost your performance a bit

Still running Asus Precision drivers. Windows says they're precision drivers and its ok but I use my mouse all of the time. Great info just watched Dave Lee's video on touchpad drivers so great timing!

S8+ or V30. You can ignore Samsung Payment in S8+ and can still comfortably use Android Pay if desired.

Pretty sweet deal I'd say. And with that PSU and case, there's a lot of room for upgrades as well, should be future-proof well.

ErrystioT got a reaction from monika2 in Thoughts on the Lenovo ThinkPad Retro?
For what it is, the price is really steep. I'd take other ThinkPad models for cheaper (like X270 or Carbon X1 for example) than the 25th Anniversary edition any day cuz it's not worth the price for what you're getting (even the "retro" feeling). It's also quite disappointing that they opted for 7th Gen at its release while 8th Gen Kaby Lake-R laptops are on their way to mainstream. Adding insult to the jury is when they decided to use 940MX instead of MX150 for the GPU. If it at least uses 8th Gen and MX150 GPU, I think many people won't complain.
