    That's good to know.

I have old man eyes now days so I can't even tell the difference once you get above 144, i am more interested in the mini-LED aspect.

The Cooler Master GP27U has a few firmware issues being ironed out, but has amazing HDR and local dimming that's worth something. Doesn't have as amazing darks like OLED, but fewer risk factors, great text clarity. Rtings gave it a solid review.

And now there's INNOCN's 27M2V, which has double the dimming zones (1,152) and fewer issues with features working together (VRR, local dimming, HDR) that the Cooler Master was working out. No major review from places like Rtings yet, but early monitor forum reviews are solid. I've got one on the way, expected Tuesday.

The O11 looks perfect, and I like the aesthetic too, thanks for the advice!  I just ordered one and now have the task of moving all the hardware over once it gets here lol.

After watching the WAN show episode I have to wonder, why building a leftist PC was ok but the Trump PC got shut down.  More fear being canceled from the left as opposed to from the right?  I don't know it just seems weird. Also, while a Ben Shapiro PC would be funny, i think a Steven Crowder pc would be more entertaining as there is just more material to pull from.

Anyone that's rocking a 1080p panel will do more than just fine with a 1070/Fury in basically any game.  Honestly my old RX 470 did very well at 1080p, and I'll go back to recommending those to literally everyone once prices become sane again.

Esports titles?  I can hold CSGO above 120fps at 4K with a fury and the settings maxed out.  Overwatch I have to turn things down a notch or two to keep things above 60fps at 4K (again, on a used Fury Nitro I bought for $300).

The things that gamers have been sold on are pretty hilarious.  Uncomfortable, tacky, and cheaply made racing seat computer chairs (gotta have that lateral support to sit still for 4 hours bro!), "A 5GHz 7700k is necessary for gaming", high refresh TN panels that look like shit, and the idea that you NEED 144hz in order to not suck at counterstrike.  Once you're on the bleeding edge (and getting paid to play videogames), any advantage, perceived or otherwise is worth it, but most people are nowhere near that level.

If you really think those extra frames are gonna make you play better, turn the settings down a bit and watch your score not change at all.  Or spend a few minutes tuning the settings to find your preferred balance between "this is running smoothly enough for me" and "I like pretty graphics", exactly the same way PC gamers have been doing it forever.

...No...  No, it doesn't work that way.  I mean, not unless you filled your computer with malware and such.  But no, Windows installs don't 'wear out' like a shoe and start hanging and blue screening at random.

Registry is a database. The whole point of a database is not to reduce performance if you have few or many items. For example, more and more posts on this forum doesn't slow it down. If it was, then older posts would be deleted. They aren't.
HDDs fragment a lot over time as you write/replace information on your system. They do this as performance optimization approach in putting data on the drive. Defragmentation with a good defrag utility help keep performance of your system up and running. If you don't want to handle all that, get an SSD.
You are most likely doing something wrong, like not letting Windows do it's maintenance schedule, or disabling things you don't understand like Prefretch or something. Mixed with startup programs, lack of RAM for the memory load you are putting on the system, and such.

That seems pointless. If you don't want malware and stuff, just don't click those things saying "These MILF's are desperate, stop masturbating?", or "Start making 1000$ a day from home" or those popups saying "click add to close this page". The best anti-malware is common sense

So? Don't install spyware, viruses, malware, and keep your system clutter free. The computer does what you tell it to.
Keep Windows and all your software fully updated, and know what you download on your system, with good web surfing practices (and common sense)

Takoren reacted to Droidbot in What's so bad about alienware laptops?
It is, for the most part.

Broadwell and later are soldered to the PCB, so you'll need to get a premade mobo or a desktop mobo, like some Clevo chassis.
GPU is mounted by the MXM socket, and GPUs are quite common for these. Eurocom for example offers upgrade kits for some of their older laptops so they can get them up to speed with the latest GPU upgrades. Machines that came with Fermi GPUs can be upgraded to Kepler 680M, 7970M, etc.
PSU is just general - 330W bricks are common as well.
IMHO this is incorrect as hell.
Alienware is as good as ever. Their laptops feel solid, well built. Ask any reviewer or owner.
The 'Alienware is shit' is just almost a meme at this point.

Their machines run cool, are easy to maintain, and you can upgrade your machine in the future quite easily.
The mid-2013 Alienware 17 can be upgraded with a fucking 1070, and yet '''lol no upgrades'''

    they arent wrong.
the answer they gave was 100% correct.  it was not tested and certified to work under those conditions.
why the fuck would they spend time to validate a server processor in a consumer workstation?

does that mean it wont work? no
does that mean you're an asshole for how you treated the support rep for doing his job? yes
its not the reps job to do individual research on every single component for every single machine.
they have documentation that they HAVE to stick to, which was written by the people who actually do that testing. if they say anything that not documented, and it doesnt work, they WILL get fired.

i did customer support for years, and on behalf of reps everywhere, fuck people like you.

EDIT: not to mention is a prebuilt system that isnt intended to be upgraded by the user in the first place.

Takoren got a reaction from Tech_Dreamer in What would you charge to fix someones PC?
For family and friends I would suggest asking these questions of yourself.

Do you enjoy the work (troubleshooting, hardware/software install, etc.)? What else would you be doing with the time you are spending doing this work? Are you prepared to deal with the chance that you can't fix and could possibly be blamed for making it worse? Does the person you are working for understand the terms with which you are doing the work? (if you install memory and the O/S gets corrupted for some reason, are they going to blame you?) Are you getting any enjoyment out the work?  (spending time with a friend/family member, just enjoy doing the work, receiving some form of compensation, etc) It may seem selfish to ask yourself these questions because they are your friend or family member but it is important to remember that asking you to do something for free is also selfish so your friend shouldn't be surprised if you ask for compensation for doing something for them that is costing you either in time or frustration and they would normally  have to pay for anyway.

On the flip side of that, if you just enjoy the work or you and your friend/family member just enjoy hanging out or maybe they want to learn how to do it themselves and you enjoy teaching them then by all means do it for free.  The joy of doing the work can be as satisfying a compensation as money, just don't let them take advantage of it.

    That's my $0.02 anyway.

Trust me, there's no money to be made there. Independent PC hardware shops make most of their income by supplying and providing support for the enterprise market. Swapping a hard drive should be an additional service, not your main offering.

If you still want to go ahead with it, don't do work for free for anyone. Charge the same for family and friends, otherwise you may find yourself constantly nagged for free work. I'd charge from a minimum of. say, 50$ just for taking the computer in, plus 25-30$ every hour you spent working on it.

I have the AW 13R3 and couldn't be happier, it runs great and plays everything I toss at it without issue. I ran AIDA 64 stressing both CPU/GPU to test heat management and didn't see any thermal throttling at all.

I got mine scratch and dent as well from Dell US and the scratch was a small scratch on the bottom of the machine, it was small enough that I had to spend about 10 minutes searching just to find it.  I have had really good on the three scratch and dent machines I have gotten from Dell with all of them being very minor blemishes.
