After my last thread about picking a laptop for photography, video editing and daily use (some cs maybe) I went with the dell xps 15 refurb from dell uk. Used it for about a day and realised 3 dead pixels and coil whine so I sent it back for a full refund. Im now stuck between the smaller version dell xps 13 with not as good specs or a Alienware 13 r3.

Screen is important for photography work and Iv read good things about both

Pictures show both specs (BOTH REFURBS).

I know the alienware is big and bulky but I dont mind that due to the specs of the machine.

The 13 R3 is a scratch and dent model which is a little worrying considering the 890 price tag.

I would strongly recommend that you watch this video if you haven't already. The alienware 13 has a configuration with an oled display. Oled is truly the best when it comes to color work.

Well I would go with the XPS 13 for photo editing because of the better color accuracy unless you get the Alienware 13 OLED screen. Also the Alienware is far more powerful and will game, while the XPS 13 will not.

yeah Ive looked at the OLED display and it does look amazing I just dont want to spend that much more money that I dont have at the moment.

That is a good price on the AW 13 so I would suggest it, but it would highly benefit from a repaste and undervolt to keep temps, noise, and battery life in check.

Yeah, the price is decent just hoping the scratch or dent isnt too bad, and thanks for the tip.

I have the AW 13R3 and couldn't be happier, it runs great and plays everything I toss at it without issue. I ran AIDA 64 stressing both CPU/GPU to test heat management and didn't see any thermal throttling at all.

I got mine scratch and dent as well from Dell US and the scratch was a small scratch on the bottom of the machine, it was small enough that I had to spend about 10 minutes searching just to find it.  I have had really good on the three scratch and dent machines I have gotten from Dell with all of them being very minor blemishes.

not to mention that you have both thunderbolt 3 and AGA for 2 eGPUs should you need in the future.

The XPS 13 does not have a port for the Alienware Graphics Amplifier. Also if you have an Alienware that supports the AGA you should *not* use a Thunderbolt 3 solution for external graphics as the AGA will give you much better performance.

The Potato Box:

AMD 5950X

EVGA K|NGP|N 3090

128GB 3600 CL16 RAM

The Scrapyard Warrior:

AMD 3950x

EVGA FTW3 2080Ti

64GB 3200 CL16 RAM

the AGA is cheaper as well than current thunderbolt 3 GPU cases but thats not the point. The point is you can have 2 eGPUs using the alienware. No laptop around lets you do that for the same price currently without opening it up and using any mini PCIe or m.2 PCIe based methods.

i know the xps 13 doesnt have AGA i meant by choosing the alienware you have 2 eGPU options.
