Many owners of r9 290 cards (especially with 2 or more) may have experienced a sudden freeze durring gaming combined with a soundloop which almost blew away your eardrum.
 
Here is a list with games where I experienced this:
-Battlefield 3, 4, Hardline
-Rocket League
-Planetside 2
-Far Cry Primal
-Star Wars Battlefront
-Assassins's Creed Syndicate/Rogue/... (only one which didn't freeze was Unity, but this game didn't work properly never the less)
 
It only happened in certain games. I was able to run Furmark for more than 8 hours without any problem.
 
Now the things I tried, which worked with certain games.
-Playing in windowed mode [worked for Star Wars]
-Playing with single card [worked mostly for Battlefield series]
-Underclocking and undervolting the cards, even thought they're running on a huge custom waterloop (total space ~ 12 times the space of a 120x120x30mm rad)
-Different Bios for GPU [DO NOT TRY THIS ONE. I took one which was recommended on an other forum on the internet and my PC went crazy for 2 days, had to reset everything etc...]
-Upgrading Mainboard Bios [It made Rocketleague at least playable for ~1h before freezing]
 
Not very useful in the end. What worked for me was following:
I took an "USB to 3.5mm A
audiojack" adapter from an old Corsair 430 Headset and plugged my headset (Sennheiser RS 175) into it and disabled in the BIOS settings the Onboard Realtek sound.
Now everything works. I was able to play the games mentioned each for more than 1 hour without any freezes, with crossfire enabled, without underclocking/undervolting, with very high fps, without window mode or any other solution mentioned above.
And I do think it has to do with the Realtek onboard sound.
 
I hope this thread will be helpful for others as I myself was searching and trying out different tricks for the past 6 months and I was really tempting to sell my 290s (even though they rock) and buy a different GPU.
 
If you have any further question don't hesitate. Or if you tried everything above with a different game where it still freezes write a comment with the game and I'll tell you if I experienced the same problems. Maybe that will be helpful for other people.

maybe already checked out crossout it's in closed beta now but you can build your own car and fight again other players in multiplayer very nice game but i don't know if you can get acces now.

Nvidia knows they have some retarded buyers. Remember when they sold that shitty reference 970 for $380 at Best Buy that everyone was dying to get? I don't think it even launched until the 970 had been out like 3 months, but morons were falling all over themselves to pay $410 after taxes for the weakest 970 on the market because it had that silver shroud that no one could see anyways when the thing was face down in your case.

It went from 13% difference at launch to 16% today, not a huge difference. The 980 never made much sense over the 970 unless price didn't matter to you.
