That just like someone I know told me that our school doesn't need Skylake PCs and I explained to him that they make the PCs last forever. There are some old Core 2 Duos still floating around at school.

Just to add on what I said before you feel accomplished when you buy stuff yourself with money you work for. This is coming from a guy who used to get most of his electronics as gifts. I work a job making $10 a hour and you start to value money more. When my mom and dad were married and he had his high paying job and my mom had hers before she quit (she had a min. wadge job and it didn't make too much of a difference if she worked anyway) she would waste money and didn't value money like my dad did until they got divorced for other reasons. The reason why? Because her parents made money and she had gotten most of the stuff she wanted (even though she claims they were poor when in reality my grandparents spent money on horses and sheep and other animals for my mom and her siblings). Whereas my dad is more frugal with his money because both his parents were school teachers in Kansas and didn't make that much money (2/3 of Kansas is poor and they lived in that part in the middle of nowhere). So do what you want but eventually, you will value money more when you work for it.

His girlfriend is canadian so he can get in without too much trouble, and the US is not that easy to get into as a permanent resident

The synology NAS has a suveillance software in it along with a bunch of other stuff. The reason why the synology nas looks like a better option because it would be less of a headache to use with a lot of the features linus would use buit in. In end though its up to you.  If you do want a Windows based storage server check out Thecus Nas because some of them even include Windows Storage Server for free on them too.

Thanks for the help!!!  I guess I was trying to find a justification (to my wife) why I needed to build another computer!!  But I do like the synology option.  I did read that it comes with a surveillance software, so this might be a better option for me!!

Id also ban the use of the Q6600 in this one, its been done and overdone now. Allow them to go as far back as Sandy Bridge. Allow them 3 days, sourcing parts and buying them, a day to build and the presentation on the final day. Budget would be $2,000 for whole system including a monitor and peripherals this time to make it more representative of a average build???

Theoretically the OEMs could put SLI fingers on the card, but Nvidia would probably stop sending them GPU chips. This is probably a misprint in translation because Galax is a company in Asia.   

I run a 970 and a i5 6600 Skylake Xeon equalvant. I get 100+ FPS on 1080p gaming, so you are fine with the GPU for a few more years at least.

i5 because the AMD CPU will bottleneck compared to a i5, plus you will get more performance with an i5. I am running a Xeon equivalent to an i5.
