Bananasplit_00 reacted to sounds in Willow, an open source Alexa replacement that respects your privacy
Summary
The good: voice detection is competitive with voice assistants from Nest and Amazon The bad: still a rough experience, DIY, lots of steps Only costs $35 to $50 depending on the ESP-32 box chosen but also needs the backend "inference server" code running on a PC somewhere in your home
Quotes
My thoughts
It can't play youtube videos yet (or even just stream the audio). But once that happens Amazon Prime music gets crossed off.

You new to large corporations? 99% chance that savings is not passed to the consumer and merely goes into shareholder's pockets and the C-suites yearly bonuses.

No one has suggested otherwise.
That's a very abstract definition of "education". Usually people use the term "Hobby", or "side hustle" at best when you're trying to turn something that you buy tools for, into a career with no formal method of education via an accredited institution.
Calling you out for trying to say education = more money to buy paint brushes for art, or a saw & drill for carpentry is not a common sense use of the term. Nitpicking would be defined as me pointing out that nitpicking is not spelled with a k, or:
Price, is not in fact, a relative term.

You're under the assumption, that a big corporation is passing the savings on to the consumer. Usually savings for a company just means more profits for the company and their shareholders, not cheaper stuff.
I wouldn't bet on cheaper spicy chicken sandwiches anytime soon....

Bananasplit_00 reacted to BachChain in Adieu AGESA - AMD switching to open-source CPU firmware
Summary
During the OCP Regional Summit, AMD announced a plan to deprecate their current AGESA CPU firmware family, citing lack of flexibility and difficulty with scaling as the primary motivations. Replacing is is what AMD is calling "openSIL", a platform-agnostic open-source set of libraries. openSIL is not yet production-ready, and isn't expected to be until around 2026. Priority is being given to server platforms, but the intention is to eventually migrate AMD's entire processor stack.

My thoughts
Assuming this pans out as advertised, this could make AMD king of the coreboot community.

Bananasplit_00 reacted to CommanderAlex in Intel Rebranding "Core i" Brand to "Core Ultra"
Summary
Intel is planning a major rebranding with their Core i-series processors by renaming them Core Ultra (insert 3/5/7/9 here) series instead. An example would be the Core Ultra 5 1003H. This rebranding is expected to start with the launch of mobile Meteor Lake processors.
Quotes
My thoughts
This is pretty crazy to hear that Intel is doing a rebranding of their Core i brand to Core Ultra. Do they really want to confuse consumers more? Intel did post a terrible Q1 2023 earning with profits down so much its a first for Intel in history. I guess a rebranding is part of trying to change their image into a new company.
The Core i7-1165G7 was just too much.

Bananasplit_00 reacted to Taf the Ghost in Steam decks used to control machine guns
I have two thoughts.
First, they've been using Xbox Controllers on remote weapon systems for over a decade because military personnel are used to the command interface. (Heck, professional sport leagues use them for replay stuff, haha.) So, nothing is really surprising about that.
Second, of course a Valve product will be at the heart of the Robot Apocalypse. At what point in the last 15 years wasn't that obvious? The Gaben is Eternal.
