Well with the way politicians are I wouldn't necessarily count on any sort of large scale fibre deployment. A year ago I might have thought so because Australia was doing it and I was hyped about the prospect, a change of government has reminded me how people in power usually think. Both Ministers and incumbent telcos. I'll quote it here for the full effect, this guy is the minister in charge of rolling out this infrastucture:

So with people like that holding the keys I think any hope of this low latency 50/10Mbps+ dream happening within this console generation is optimistic. If these laggards have their way we'll be waiting two console generations before we see anything like the infrastructure needed. Hell, it took a whole console generation to go from this being floated as an idea to only now get boots on the ground.

If we do see it though one thing's for sure, I won't be able to use it.

edit: for context the tech that would last "thirty years" is a fibre internet connection and the tech that works now is VDSL and HFC....

The thing about people making points about the Wii U not having enough games is that they forget what their other consoles have had during that first year. The Wii for example had Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Zelda: Twilight Princess and Wii Sports as the big first party titles and nothing that great in terms of third party. Nothing third party that sold fantastically that I'd want to remember anyways. A great lineup right? However during that same period the Wii U got Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D World, The Wind Waker HD, New SMB U + Luigis, Nintendo Land as well as maybe half of the big third party titles. That's a poor showing?

The real reason for their failure to reach the heights of the Wii was the fact that Nintendo Land is no Wii Sports. I think they were expecting it to be and if you have it you can see why. It's just much, much harder to explain the appeal.

People keep saying they'll shoot it down and I'm all confused. You think you could actually get away with shooting down a UAV in the middle of the street? Surely you'd get done for that. Plus again the device would have a camera and a GPS so it would know where it was shot and, potentially, have a picture of the shooter to send back.

Then again I am an Australian. I don't know how you Americans actually work. Is randomly shooting down things in the street actually a thing? Do people walk around randomly shooting CCTV cameras and street lamps? Maybe you guys love your guns more than I thought you did.

You're right although they're not into gaming and for general tasks the i3 will run quite a bit better. Doing a bit of research for their the similarly priced Pentium G3220 seems to beat the identically priced A6 5400K in all of the benchmarks and uses less power while doing it. So if I was to cut costs maybe I'd probably be better going with the Pentium G3220.

...... which again looking at benchmarks probably isn't that bad of an idea. For $65 less the Pentium G3220 probably isn't that bad an option.

skywake got a reaction from JDGaulin in Pokemon X/Y differences?
Right now this is all that's known about version differences: http://serebii.net/xy/exclusives.shtml

So not much is known yet and we'll probably not know much about any of the other version differences before launch. This is the first time that they've done a simultaneous worldwide release so a lot isn't known yet. For those who can't be bothered clicking the link X has an item that can be given to Mewtwo that makes it a Fighting/Psychic "Mega Evolution" and Y has an item that makes it a Psychic "Mega Evolution". Both have unknown other stat changes. Ontop of that the X legendary is a Fairy type Pokemans and the Y Legendary is Dark/Flying.

As for what those types are if you're into more competitive fighting: http://serebii.net/xy/typechart.shtml
Dark/Flying will be weak to Ice, Rock and Fairy and immune to Ground and Psychic
Fairy will be weak to Poison and Steel and immune to Dragon
Fighting/Psychic will be weak to Ghost and Fairy
Psychic is weak to Bug, Ghost and Dark

skywake reacted to LinusTech in Build-Off Week 13: Linus' Ideal Rig
This was really tough... There were things that stuck out as issues to me about all of them...

    1. Low density memory modules. I always prefer to populate fewer slots with higher density modules for better compatibility now, and to have an upgrade path in the future.

    2. Small hard drives. 1TB or even 2TB hard drives don't represent as good a value as 3TB drives right now in many cases, so I'd rather compromise on a Noctua fan for more storage. With that said, if anyone had downgraded the rig a bit and worked in a redundant NAS they would have won for sure.

    3. Pre-filled liquid coolers. I'm still not 100% sure what my own feelings are on them to be honest. I love the idea and I love the look of them, but the reality is that unless you go for a Swiftech one or a dual 140mm one they don't really perform much better than an NH-D14. So no right answer there...

    4. AMD vs NVIDIA. Right now for a high end single GPU rig, the only right answer is GTX 780. Maybe that changes in a little while here though

    5. Sound cards. I really liked venomz' build, but I wouldn't have gone for the RoG Hero board and a mediocre sound card. If you're going to get an add-in sound card, I'd cheap out further on the board and get a better one in most cases. Especially because with Haswell the board doesn't affect overclocking much. I saw a couple external sound cards in there, and I'm still not 100% decided about those. Getting an internal sound card has benefits such as giving you a cleaner mic in compared to crappy onboard. An O2 doesn't achieve that.

    6. I don't like plastic cases, so most of you kinda lost me there, but I understand we were working within a budget I liked the FT03 build, but honestly I've never been able to achieve the silence I seek with a small form factor build so I've yet to feel like I could actually move my personal rig to ITX or even mATX. 750D was a great choice from ilikemacandpc, but he could never have won with a forum handle about liking mac anyway (jk)

    7. RAID0 SSDs. Saw this show up a couple of times. I run them, but I really really don't recommend them except in VERY rare circumstances. If you build included an external nightly backup solution, then, AND ONLY THEN are you allowed to configure your ideal Linus rig with a RAID0 boot drive.

    8. Everyone did really well on the monitor. I guess that makes sense since the PB278Q is the last thing I actually bought for myself

    9. Small boot drives. I saw quite a few folks go for 128GB-class SSDs. I find 240/256 the minimum for me these days. YMMV though.

    10. Power supply choices. I saw CoolBeans nailed it with the Corsair RM series. That's what I would choose if I was shopping today. Maximum silence. Mmmm.

    11. I didn't see any dedicated fan controllers or means of controlling fans. That means the folks who chose ASUS boards were thinking ahead a bit more since their Fan Xpert II control is pretty cool.

All in all this thread was a total blast to read because in spite of everything I said above, it's amazing how closely you guys have nailed down the stuff I really like versus the stuff I wouldn't recommend. There wasn't anything in this thread that raised any major alarms for me and I think that's really cool. It makes me feel great about the PC recommendations new builders are getting on this site.

I don't want to choose the winner because I just really liked seeing this thread and how closely everyone pays attention to what we do.

Topic is what it says in the title. Post your favourite tracks from a gaming. Can be console, PC, mobile whatever (there's no "general gaming" thread so I'm posting it here) . Can be because it was a big and memorable part in the game, because it tugs at your nostalgia strings or simply a track you enjoyed. Whatever it is if you want to share some musics you liked in a game post it here.

It's not just the power consumption but it's also the heat output. I guess in Canada where power is cheap and your toes are blue in the winter having a CPU/GPU with a massive TDP is not a big deal. Doesn't cost that much more to run because power is cheap AND it keeps your feet warm. Here in Aus where power is 26c/kwh AU the power saving thing is a bigger deal for sure. However it's even more of a bigger deal in a climate where in summer you can call a 30C day mild with a straight face. It has been hovering just under 20C for the last few weeks and people are still wearing jumpers.....

skywake got a reaction from Cobalt in Do you think my man Linus is a bit too harsh on consoles?
I think they are a bit harsh and I think if you look at my avatar you'll probably understand why I think that. At the end of the day the whole reason we play games is to enjoy the games and if a console has exclusives people like then that's where they'll go. Now I'm not going to defend the PS4/XBone because their appeal is mostly in the multi-platform titles that come to the PC anyway. I will however happily defend Nintendo and complain about their Nintendo bashing.

For a start the 3DS is a fantastic piece of hardware and I don't think Linus & Slick are fooling anyone when they try to act cool by bashing it. I suppose they think that's what their audience demands or something similar. The truth is the 3DS is selling very well. It's no DS which had sold 50mill by this point and ended up being the best selling console ever but 34mill ain't bad esp when it's competitor has moved ~5mill. More importantly it has some awesome exclusive content. Super Mario 3D Land, Luigi's Mansion 2, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, a fantastic remake of Ocarina of Time and cool little downloadable stuffs like Pushmo, Mighty Switch Force. I thought it was particularly interesting that after bashing the idea of the 2DS on the WAN show Slick then went and did a puff piece about it .... so perhaps they should do just a tiny little bit more research before they go on the attack.

Now even as a Nintendo fan I must agree that the Wii U is a harder device to defend. I own one and I love it with the little content it has and the shield-like experience of off-TV play. However the numbers aren't on my side, it's not doing well and there isn't that much compelling exclusive content. With that said it's not a horrible piece of hardware, it is and will continue to be fantastic when the content is fantastic regardless of how underpowered it is. Lets not forget how quickly gamers of all styles will pick up a Controller when Smash Bros, especially when it's the N64 version, is being played. In the same way that Slick will instantly change his mind about Nintendo when someone says Pokemon some people, like myself, remain fans because they keep churning out good software.

    Anyways, that's my 2c.
