excell as most can build their own tables and in the usa every town has different tax rates so its difficult to build just one app

IBM does do custom database related products, and I imagine they would make their own. IBM screwed up NZ's police database back in the 90s.
We have a alcohol brewing company that makes their own supply chain and logistics software but that is quite a big company to afford a team of software engineers.
Iv never thought about what MS or Apple uses. That would actually be interesting.
You'd have to look through job adverts. Its a social engineering technique they taught us at uni is to go through job adverts to guess what technology a company uses if you want to hack them.

I've personally done this on a 2nd hand R9 290 Twin Frozr card in an attempt to resurrect it from a previous heat-related death (I took possession of it after buying it as 'dead' off of a client). I unfortunately do not have pictures that i can recall of the inside of the card but there was nothing tricky in the design of the card that would break or be damaged if done in any different manner from that of a regular GTX or AMD cards.
Simply unscrew all visible screws; Undo the fan connector from the header; and give a little tug to get the heatsink+fans off.

The chances are likely it would if your cards been running hot for a while already. Just make use of a reputable brand of thermal paste and I see no reason why it would not. In my case - the card no longer had insane overheating to the point of shut-down; as well as coming back to life for regular use in gaming (so i sold it for x3 the cost a week later). While you're in there - It wouldn't hurt to clean out any dust that's collected up on the fan blades or fins of the heatsink

Something with a RAID controller in it. Most NAS boxes you can buy online (like from Synology or QNAP) can already do this. It depends on how much data the computers are pulling at once. If all of them max out 1Gb (which is give or take 100-110MB/sec after overhead), then you'll be running into issues. Theoretically any modern OS. Though there are ones built specifically for NASes like FreeNAS. You should be able to add drives to the existing array. How to do it on the RAID configuration itself I'm not sure, but I'm sure it's straightforward.

That's down to the actual drives, not the RPM. They have additional firmware features to adjust themselves to cope better with the increased vibrations (and heat) that comes from running multiple drives in close proximity.

They are designed to run 24/7 rather than being repeatedly being started and stopped like a normal desktop drives. They go through testing to ensure they can deal with those conditions, while something like a WD Black will not. Doesn't mean it will last longer than a WD Black will, but a WD Black is going to be more vulnerable to NAS and RAID environments as they're not designed for it. If you put WD Blacks in a NAS, you'd likely find you void their warranty by doing so (probably, I haven't read though it myself).

You can never be certain how long a drive will last. Things can slip through QA and end up dying before their warranty is up. If you wanted ones that WD stands by a bit more, WD Red Pros are better, with a 5 year warranty compared to the normal Reds' 3 years.

Losing 2 drives shouldn't be enough to permanently lose data with a good system/ Regardless of how good your redundancy is, you're not protected from data loss unless you have a good backup solution. If you have to choose between a backup and redundancy, go for the backup. Even with multiple drives worth of redundancy, if you get a power surge, fire, water damage etc. that takes out all the drives in the NAS, you've lost all the data and redundancy if you don't have a good backup. Ideally you'd want a backup that is connected to the NAS externally and is updated automatically. Then you'd want an offsite backup that is done periodically.

Good choice. Yes, it will serve 4 (and some more) computers at once. Security depends on the device itself but you should be able to limit shares to users on a predefined basis with one share being public for all.

You'll be setting the NAS as a network share within Windows.

Flashie reacted to Oshino Shinobu in I'm about to buy a NAS - (Need reassurance)
Why SSHDs? The network is going to limit the speed of normal HDDs, buying SSHDs would just be throwing money away.

If you're going to have multiple users accessing it at once, you'll probably want to invest in a managed switch and set up LACP on the switch and the two ethernet ports on the NAS. It will double your bandwidth for multiple transfers (you will still be limited to 1Gbps per session though, LACP does not change that, but it can allow two PCs to use 1Gbps each for example.

For permissions, you have a few options. You should be able to set up permissions through QNAP's software, or you can just use CIFS shares and set the permissions through Windows to allow or deny users access.

You can map the shares created on the NAS as a network drive on Windows, which then basically treats the network share as a local drive.

Here's mine for example. I have two network shares mapped, giving them a drive letter like any other drive (in my case, S and Z drives).

get 4 nice and fast regular old 7200RPM HDDs.

on the topic of security.. i'm sure there'll be some form of permissions built in, trough samba, FTP, or whatever else this system uses.

I'd say go for 5400RPM. The network will limit any improvements of 7200RPM over 5400RPM, but 5400RPM drives tend to run quieter, cooler and produce less vibrations.

Thanks for all the help tonight guys; Taking all of you guys' advice in mind i've decided to  go with 5 of the Western Digital Reds (Regular ones 5400RPM); 4 in use of the NAS and 1 as a spare in the case of failure (to ensure the systems back up as soon as possible). Thanks for all the replies guys I've learnt a lot tonight; Just a pity it isnt the Business Studies i was meant to be learning for tomorrows exam

Flashie reacted to TechBruhE in help with neighbors from hell
I live in a somewhat rural small town of about 500 people, give or take, and for the past few years ive had problems with one of my neighbors in particular, a family of 5, they have taken scrap metal from my back yard, dug up remains from a burn pile in my back yard and then dumped it INSIDE of my garage, they swapped my city trash can with theirs, theirs was half broken, among other miscellaneous things, so about 2 years ago I built a privacy fence, I don't make a lot of money and live alone so it took about 7 months to build, its about 4-500ft in circumference I think, anyway while I was building it they refused to move their things off of my property, so I paid 650$ to have the property surveyed, they said they would move their stuff, about 2 months later they set it on fire and pushed it farther onto my property. as I continued building my fence they drove their vehicles between the posts and parked in my back yard. I left 18' from my fence to the property line so that I wouldn't have to be on their property for maintenance and so they wouldn't use my fence as their personal storage, well they have been anyway, last year I sent pictures to city hall and had the police talk to them about the property line, they moved their stuff for a few months, then put it back. they keep adding more leaning up against the fence, mowing the past month has been a challenge on that part of the property with all their things in the way. they recently put up a garage about 5 feet away from my fence which isn't to code. tonight I was mowing and they had parked one of their cars, literally against my fence. I took a picture with my phone. ive been thinking about putting up cameras to record them, maybe a monitor mounted on my fence, with a message on it for them, just curious about some cheap ways to do such a project.
