Atomicnerd64 got a reaction from Canada EH in VT-d on a 60$ board?!?!?
it has a lot to do with the motherboard. the z87 sabertooth I mentioned? no vt-d with the same cpu. asus's implementation didnt pass some tests and thus none of their z87 boards have vt-d.

So I got sidetracked with my Air 00 build but back to this now that I have time.

Here is my 3mm acrylic PSU cover ready to go.

Metallic graphite mica is the colour I used.

Watercooling the ram this time around.

    Custom cable shield.

Fans are the same colour as the rads.

    Figuring out the different runs.

Do you guys like my flow meter? I'm not sure if it will be included or not.

There will also be some green LED fans from cougar in the front and back, the painted fans are on the top rad.

The place I work at just got a load of servers in and we want to sell them, that got me thinking. How many people in the consumer market care about servers? I have recently watched the video that Linus made about them so I was thinking It was a good idea to sell them here, so should I list them? Here is the list of servers if any one is interested  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bAE-VEO9T08vkVKJggRaZWxYGI7H63ZYkbrsna-7qH0/edit?usp=sharing [Link is fixed]

Atomicnerd64 reacted to Crowcore in AMD FX-8350 Vs. Intel Core i5-4460
Yes, for gaming, the i5 4460 is much better. The FX 8350 (or even FX 9370) will already bottleneck high-end GPUs today.
There are alomst no games that can handle more then 4 threads, but single core performance is crucial to play games.

If you are on a budget, you could even get an i3 4370 and gaming performance will not suffer much (-3.5 FPS on average on 1080p, but you more than make up for it with the following suggestion). Still has 4 threads and is even higher clocked (3.8 GHz). It's a gret value. Especially bundled with a H97 micro-ATX mainboard (unless you plan to use three graphics cards at the same time it's a perfect format).

    Use the saved money for a better GPU like a R9 380 4GB or GTX 960 4GB.

Also, you don't need more than a 400W PSU, or 450W if you're gonna overclock like crazy (the Cooler Master G450M is good). So you save a few box there for an even more balanced build.

The i5 is of course more future-proof. Maybe the savings on mainboard & PSU are enough to get the better GPU ?

looks good!! maybe you could get a 32gb ssd though? if you're going to use squid or want to see logs of your traffic, it could be beneficial but the hard drive is just fine. make sure to make a build log and share your experience.

Atomicnerd64 reacted to Maki Role in Project Parvum Argentum - The high power sequel to Loramentum - PSW Swap Update 27/02/17
    Hello once again!

It seems the time is now right to get the thread going for my latest build adventure, hopefully this one will really be something special.

I present to you, Project Parvum Argentum!

    Brief:

A few months back, Justin of Parvum Systems approached me with a proposition.  The idea was to create a wall mounted PC in a similar vein to Loramentum, but with monstrous hardware in mind.  Seeing as Parvum did the machining for my last build, the thought of a collaboration project very much whetted my appetite.

So how is this going to differ from Loramentum?  Well, scale mostly.  This build is going to feature a lot of hardware, both on the cooling side and in specs.  In making this project larger, we also wanted to make some parts more daring.  Whereas Loramentum features a simple 2 part clamshell design, we thought it would be interesting to increase that to three layers so that channels can pass over and under each other.  What also differs is what stage I'm starting the log at.  In Loramentum all the main renders were complete before embarking on the build.  Owing to the number of manufacturers involved in this build, it seemed like that would be a tough call, so this time you'll be able to see the design evolve.  I'll update the OP when the final renders for the project are completed so that they don't get lost.

I'd also like to give a big thank you to everybody who's decided to sponsor this project and to Justin at Parvum!  Without you guys this project could never have been possible.

    Specs:

So what specs are we talking about here?

    CPU: Intel Core i7 5960X
Motherboard: Asus X99E-WS (kindly supplied by Asus)
    RAM: TBD (likely 64-128GB)
Graphics: 4(!) x Nvidia GTX Titan X (kindly supplied by Nvidia)
    Storage: TBD
Power Supply: SuperFlower Leadex Platinum 2000W 8-Pack Edition (kindly supplied by SuperFlower)

    Cooling:

    4 x 480mm rads
    4 x Laing D5
Aquacomputer Aquaero 6 for fan control
    Rest is TBD

    First Goodies:

Here are the first components to arrive:

    First Renders:
The plan is to do a fully rendered version of the build, like I did for Loramentum. As such, I began to model the components that were sent, chiefly the PSU and motherboard. The following images were made using Autodesk Inventor and Blender (using Cycles to render the images).

I now have a clean slate:

Next step will be removing the drive cage and motherboard tray. I looked at it briefly while taking the photos and it looks like HP got a little too creative on the LSD again so I have a feeling that removing all of the rivets will be the fastest option(and I mean all of the rivets), but I'll save that mess for another day.

And I want to clarify something to you all since I have already received 2 PM's on this, but yes a full ATX motherboard will fit in this case, no the board isn't too long. Take a look:

See, HP mATX case and a ATX motherboard. Sure the drive cage gets in the way(which will be removed), and yes the case will need a new motherboard tray(and I/O mounts), but it fits nonetheless.
(Pretty bitchin motherboard, I had it laying around and wanted to show it off. I know @tmcclelland455 will appreciate it I'll use my Asus P3C-D in a retro build someday...)

It will get the job done. The i3 just has hyperthreading so it has 2 cores but 4 threads and will give you a better experience, faster that what the pentium would, if a lot of people are using the nas at the same time
