What do you guys think of this PFSense parts list?

Hi once again LTT community :)

I would like to ask what you guys think of this PFSense parts list,

the router is just gonna be used as a firewall and a router with the NBN.

here is the link: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/TyRkpg

notes:

  • I already have 4 gigs for used RAM for it
  • I will find a HDD at the time I will be looking to buy the machine
  • A USB will be used for the installation

Anyways, once again, thanks for helping :D

well.. the thing thats actually tripping me off here is the case/psu combo.

for a device thats on (and working) 24/7 its actually worth checking PSU efficiency.

i'm not saying you should go and buy 80+ gold or better. but if you can fish up a PSU out of an HP office computer with standard connectors, they're usually 90%+ efficient.

Every PSU has the worst idle efficiency, Gold or Platinum will almost make no difference.  Unless the CPU is always on load, PSU efficiency ratings doesn't really matter.

looks good!! maybe you could get a 32gb ssd though? if you're going to use squid or want to see logs of your traffic, it could be beneficial but the hard drive is just fine. make sure to make a build log and share your experience.

I am a member of the PCMasterRace. I am terribly sad to announce that I own a PeasantStation 3 Super Slim. it's in a drawer away from my glorious PC.

Efficiency has nothing to do with whether it will blow up or not.. The Corsair CX's are bronze, chances are the Acer one you got isn't even rated for 80 Plus.  And since 80 Plus has nothing to do with power stability and everything to do with efficiency, Acer could still have a decent one in your prebuilt.

i never said anythin about blowing out...

my acer one indeed isnt rated for 80+, but not being rated doesnt mean that it isnt.

it somehow has an i7 4770 and GT640 at idle run at 40 watts from the wall, which is less than my i3 560 thats right next to it...

EDIT: should mention: the i3 is on a quality 80+ bronze unit.
