Only the slot difference, just go about installing your OS the same as with any other drive.

Firstly I'm glad to see that you are already aware that read caching is not effective for the data change rate you are expecting, write caching can still help though but needs to be both big enough and actually faster than the capacity pool. If your reading/writing large streams of sequential data 10+ HDD will actually be faster than 2 SSD in a mirror set to cache.

Also I would advise against RAID 10 as it is not any safer or any faster for sequential reading or writing, in fact slower. RAID 10 is for high queue depth random write I/O so if that isn't what you are doing then don't use it. There is a caveat to this recommendation but I'll mention it when I get to it.

On to FreeNAS/FreeBSD. Not having ever used a Linux/BSD OS before isn't going to be too much of an issue, it is all driven by the web interface for normal operation. If something does go horribly wrong then Linux/BSD knowledge would help but you can just reinstall FreeNAS and re-import the ZFS pool rather than fix it. Shouldn't ever be an issue anyway.

The 128GB-256GB ram you mention really is not required. Those large ram requirements per TB is for when you are using the deduplication feature of ZFS which you won't be using for performance reasons. Start with 64GB and increase only if performance is an issue and can be conclusively proved that it is due to insufficient ram.

Should you actually use FreeNAS versus say a QNAP or Windows Server well that depends on a few things like what client OS you are using. If the clients accessing the NAS are Windows then I would be leaning more towards Windows for better SMB3 compatibility since performance is a focus of yours. Remember that both FreeNAS and QNAP use SAMBA for creating Windows shares so suffer the same fate in that respect, not that it's slow or anything but not as fast as a Windows computer with comparable hardware.

Now there are two options you could go for hardware wise for Windows Server
Hardware RAID (Perfectly fine don't listen to the internet doom train esp since you are going to back the system up) Windows Server 2012 R2/2016 Storage Spaces Hardware RAID:
Using a good hardware RAID controller such as an LSI 9361-8i with 1G/2G flash cache will give extremely good RAID 6 performance in both read and write, easily expandable (much more so than ZFS), and OS agnostic.

    Windows Storage Spaces:
The first thing is to decide on the type of configuration you want to use as this will determine if Windows Server 2016 is required. Another thing to keep in mind which I eluded to at the start is with Storage Space if high performance is required then mirror configurations on all storage tiers is required, meaning like RAID 10.

You could do a pure HDD Windows Storage Spaces configuration which means you could use either Server 2012 R2 or Server 2016. If you want to do a tier configuration then Server 2016 is a must.

The reason for why Server 2016 is a must for tier configurations is there are important improvements that are only in this OS. The primary one is that ReFS has been made much smarter and will always write to the fastest tier and disks, even for modifications. So if you have 4-6 SSDs and 10 HDDs in the pool writes will always go to the SSDs ensuring fast performance, especially if the HDD tier is configured in dual parity which you won't be doing.
    https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/clausjor/2015/11/19/storage-spaces-direct-in-technical-preview-4/

As a bit of performance data for you I use Windows Server 2016 Storage Spaces with 6 Samsung Pro SSDs with larger HDDs. I have my SSD tier configured in two-way mirror and HDD tier in dual parity and I get 2.5GB/s read and 1.5GB/s write. It is also important to know that in Storage Spaces the SSD tier is usable capacity, it is NOT just a cache.

Yes I also prefer QNAP over Synology but for this a prebuilt NAS would be able to do the job but at a much higher cost.

Nothing you say will change any of the facts. Most people aren't good at using computers. Most people would update their PC if they TRULY understood the benefits of it. If people needed to do a test (like you need for driving a car), most people would hopelessly fail.....

Yeah, I'm not sure whereabouts you live, but the majority of capital cities in Australia have had NBN rolled out for 5+ years. I had South Brisbane Fiber in 2012 which is 100mbps and  5mbps up, and Now I have 100mbps down and 40mbps up with NBN. It's kind of annoying when everyone thinks our whole country has bad internet because of these kind of posts, I get how people still don't have nbn, but you would have to live pretty far out from the city for it to not apply to you. Wouldn't you at least have ADSL2+ where you are?

Edit*: mbps replacing mb/s. 100 megabits down, not bytes.

Try making purchasing decisions that don't negatively impact the rest of the gaming industry/world.

Buying a console, is rewarding anti-consumer business practices. Same thing with pre-ordering and buying worthless DLC skin packs.

Why don't they take down sites like putlocker that host the actual movie files on their website? Instead of a site that hosts literally a string of text. (magnet links)

Anyway, even if all torrent sites get shut down people will just host their magnet links on pastebin or other text sharing websites

I've had windows 10 since the technical preview and I've never had an automatic restart. Maybe if people weren't so ignorant and just updated whenever one is available (At the end of their gaming session or whatever) this wouldn't happen.

I'm almost certain that this would only happen if you continuously postpone the update (Up to months on end) until you rightfully get put in your place. It's really irritating that people always blame Windows 10 for everything that goes wrong with their computer when in fact, most of the time it is their fault. I really don't understand how hard it is to leave your computer update for an extra 5> minutes after they shut it down. The "shutdown" option in the menu literally changes to "update and shutdown" yet people still refuse to click it, and just power off manually.

Once again, even if you click postpone, really, is it that difficult to update with the shutdown. I'm sick of these topics and to be honest, the people that actually are forced to update rightfully deserve it.

This isn't windows is fault........... windows only updates once a week or every 2 weeks, and it only takes 1 minutes to reboot and install.

I have NEVER had windows RANDOMLY reboot on my pc or either of my parents pc.

Let me also remind you of something the my mother said. Every action has its consequences.

If people are too ignorant or computer illiterate to shutdown via the start bar which would say "update and shutdown" then the consequence is that updates will install while you are using your computer.

God forbid Microsoft is trying to improve its operating system.
1 minute people saying "windows 10 is broken" (it's not, by the way), nek minnit "windows restarted my computer while I was doing something". Maybe if you updated once in a while then this wouldn't happen? 2 birds 1 stone??? Or maybe common sense is too far gone nowadays

The most annoying thing about apple is all the haters that criticise them. Last year I actually wanted to switch to a Samsung S6 but nope... More expensive than a 6s. The 6s is the best when it comes to the nvme storage solution and the camera. I've also found myself using force touch more than I thought I would. The fingerprint scanner is still the best I've ever used.

Also my 4s still doesn't lag whereas every android phone I've ever used lags like fuck after 6 months.
Also if I wanted more customisability I would just jailbreak my 6s but it's fine it's a phone not a computer it doesn't need any more options then there are currently available
