Windows 10 ruined live CS:GO stream

Apologies in advance if this is not newsworthy. Thanks in advance to any moderators who do decide to move this.

After deciding to try and ruin advertise during the weather by attempting to automatically install midway through a forecast, Windows 10 is starting to wreak havoc with gamers. Ex-professional Counter Strike player turned full-time streamer Erik Flom was rudely interrupted mid-game and live on Twitch by Windows 10 automatically installing on his PC.

“What. What!? How did this happen! Fuck you Windows 10!” Flom screamed at the PC. “Oh my God! You had one job PC. We turned off everything. Update faster you fuck!”

This is a bit of a follow up post to this.

Well, awhile ago a Windows 10 popup interrupted a live weather report. Now it has decided to interrupt a live CS:GO stream. He was not off to make a cup of coffee or anything, he was actively playing and Windows 10 decided to do... this.

Lovely.

Reminder to all: Turn OFF automatic update installation for both yourselves and other people. It seems word of Windows 10's antics have not been spread far enough.

The person in question was a "retired" CS:GO player who became a full time streamer instead. I believe it is just matchmaking, not a league match in ESEA, Faceit or whatnot.

In TF2 league matches teams are allowed to type "pause" into the console to do exactly that, usually for the purpose of something like player Internet connections dropping or whatnot. I am fairly certain something similar would exist for CS:GO, but it would still be less than convenient nonetheless.

If this happened in a tournament I would laugh so hard.

I don't read the reply to my posts anymore so don't bother.

xD ahhahaha stupid people... if you set it to update automatically, what the hell do you expect!?

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Well, from a lay person's or naïve perspective, the idea of Windows 10's automatic updating system automatically determining when you are not using your computer and doing routine work then, is an excellent idea.

However, Microsoft's implementation is... well... less than impressive.

I would be curious to look at their logic flowcharts and see what their idea of the "AFK or not" algorithm was supposed to work. What part of the logic decided a person mashing FPS movement keys, constant input from a mouse and having streaming software running is AFK?

Yeah clearly it's not working right but that's not new information.  I remember Windows Vista (I think it was) doing things like this years ago... like 2008 kind of thing.

Between things like this being well documented, and recently all the news of peoples' pre Windows 10 (7, 8, etc.) machines "automatically" upgrading, it's shocking to me how some people can be so careless as to not bother checking their automatic update settings.  You can't get mad at the computer if you didn't tell it what you do and don't want it to do! xD

That is a somewhat inconsiderate perspective.

You have to remember Windows is not Linux. People of all technical skill levels use it, from none, to IT professionals.

Some people do not follow technology news. They install Windows 10, and just start using it. They assume Microsoft have done their research and will make the default settings the most optimal for the most mainstream audience. (Hint: NOT the people who go through every single setting, because they will do that and check every setting regardless of whether Microsoft have set it for them or not).

They do not spend any time going through every nook and cranny in the settings menu configuring everything to their liking.

Microsoft have been developing their OS for quite awhile. They are not new to software design. It seems they have deliberately not followed basic design principles when it came to interfaces. As an example, the torrent style updating system (Update from more than one place) is hidden behind 4 clicks I believe?

The people who don't bother to look - the "little old lady" and so on - are probably fine with it working however it does.  What I have an issue with is I've seen numerous cases of people who should know better - tech writers, CS:GO players, etc. - that supposedly have some level of computer skills, and theoretically, spend some amount of time online, and would thus notice these stories of people falling victim to the updates, and yet, we still get stories like this... I can't explain it.  Maybe you can? :P

You really shouldn't turn them off entirely.  Just don't set them to full-auto, and take a second to look through what it is planning to install before you pull the trigger.  I'm pretty sure Windows 7 will also reboot while gaming if you set it "right"

Thank God shit like this is getting fixed in the Anniversary update, where you can set up "active hours" so that the PC never restarts during those set hours.

No matter whether the auto update is on or not, the installation shiuld NOT happen when he is.gaming. The OS knows he's running a fullscreen program with constant input. His computer is under honestly pretty heavy load( gaming and streaming). This is plain retard on the microsoft side.

oh absolutely.  Microsoft are either completely incompetent or being intentionally huge dicks about both restating during games (and other things) and pushing Windows 10 like crazy.  There's no doubt about the fact they are in the wrong! :)  but... that doesn't mean people don't have some responsibility to look out for themselves as well.

It would only be catastrophic (that's very strong word) of it happened during a big fan event not a silly in-game MatchMaking.

And meanwhile, in Linux land, you can make even make live KERNEL updates without even needing to restart.

Well Windows does have MS DOS still hidden inside it.....despite the NT Kernel.

Right after reading the title I though Win 10 would have an update to ruin streaming CSGO specifically...

But it is not. It is just Microsoft forcing the OS upgrade.

This already happened last year, even Luke talked about it on a WAN show when it happened on his PC while his GF was using it.

Now when it happened to someone well known (?!) Hopefully it brings so much attention MS stops this bullshit.

I'm calling bullshit on this one. If it had happened in that way then not only would the update kill CSGO it would also have killed his streaming software too. The fact he continued to broadcast after the update started tells me he somehow staged the event just to try and get some extra publicity. I mean c'mon, why would his PC updating the entire operating system allow OBS, Xsplit or whatever else to continue to run? It just makes no sense at all.

Windows shuts down processes 1 at a time, and not always in the same order, I've had audio playing in the background at one point right up until a few seconds before the shutdown completed.
