A new law forces Chinese companies to provide encryption keys

While the debate on the topic rages on in the West, China now has joined Kazakhstan in the club of nations that have compromised the encryption of their citizens’ data for the sake of the state. As part of new anti-terrorism legislation passed by China’s legislature, internet companies that operate within the borders of China are required to hand over encryption keys and passwords to data when requested by the government.

So it seems that the Chinese government want to be able to access any and all companies encryption and their data, should they request it. Although understand this isn't a case of PROVIDING encryption keys right away, but rather being forced to give them up if it is REQUESTED.

Although that still doesn't rule out the fact that many companies are going to be displeased with this, especially companies that have relations with products being made in China, it could cause conflictions between companies and the Chinese governments, as obviously a company who is sat within for example the US may not want to abide by this, but in the end will have to if any of their business resides in China.

I personally prefer that companies can hold data away from the government as it is private information, but there is situations where they may have to or have interest in pursuing personal data, even if I do not agree with their reasons. We can wait to see how companies react to this such as Apple and Samsung.

The legal status of any data held by a company is determined by the country in which said data resides, not the country which the company resides in.

Chinese companies will simply start storing data in other countries where it cannot be touched by the Chinese government, much like when MS moved their data farms to Ireland.

Not going to lie, only thing that surprised me was China this long to actually do it though.

Pretty much any company that matters outside of China will get around it, no doubt, all this does though is move some jobs away from china, and into other regions.

I don't think so, never heard this, but could be true I guess. I know a lot of politicians are trying  to do this. Dumb ass holes.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch
