Sensor on AMD CPU

Hi Guys

 

So a friend gave me a sensor to mesure the temperatur of my CPU. He only used Intel CPU's so far and he told me where I should install it there. But we are still trying to figur out where to put it at an AMD CPU. One thought was to glue it to the side of the CPU but I am not to comfortable with that. I can't put it in between the CPU and the Waterblock otherwise the sensor will break. he told me.

CPUs does have intergrated sensor 

 

having a sensor on a CPU is kinda hard when it needs cooling too. i would say try to have it on the cooler block. the big thing that is on contact with the CPU. im not sure but you can just use intergrated one

I know but for a certain reason, wich is complicated to explain since the setup is complicated and englisch is not my mothertongue, I would like to use the sensor I have got.

AMD CPUs calculate the temperature using the northbridge based on power conditions. This is why they're famously inaccurate in low-power usage situations.

Fair enough.

However, I am unsure why you would want to put an extra sensor in, unless we're talking custom loop. I suppose your best bet would be to put it "under" the CPU, on the back of the motherboard but I have no idea what the temp differences are and what the readings errors might be (probably quite high). Don't think there's an "appropriate" place to stick it to and still get reasonable readings

try beside the cooler and the CPU when you have them mounted, attache it with tape and maybe thermal paste around it. maybe that works

I just use the default temp sensor it works decently if you place a fan on the VRMs to cool the mobo also! :D

Don't put that type of sensor in/on your CPU. For AMD the best placement of that temp sensor would be directly on your VRM's with some non-conductive heat tape (Kapton https://www.tedpella.com/tape_html/tape.htm ). The VRM's -depending on the board- are going to be the component you'll need to keep cool during OC's, it will be painfully obvious if your CPU is thermal throttling, not so much with the VRM's as the symptoms can vary from BSOD's, hitching, and even fires.

Something shouldn't just work decent, especially when it's sole purpose is to protect the life of a CPU, accuracy is of the utmost importance. I still have no idea why AMD managed to fuck their sensor up so hard.

Yeah thought of this also but wouldn't the tape melt?

 

And where should I tape it to? Where on the CPU and the tape just on the Motherboard?

What do you mean with fucked up their sensor? Isn't  it just a virtual sensor which calculats the temperatur with the voltage and stuff?

If its just custom watercooling then it doesn't really matter! I thought for a minute reading this that you intended to go sub zero. The main thing is don't put it between the CPU and the waterblock!

I guess on the top of the CPU but that is where the cooler goes... :(

What do you mean with fucked up their sensor? Isn't it just a virtual sensor which calculats the temperatur with the voltage and stuff?

They use an algorithm derived from the socket twmp, and its known to be pretty innacurate sometimes.

If its just custom watercooling then it doesn't really matter! I thought for a minute reading this that you intended to go sub zero. The main thing is don't put it between the CPU and the waterblock!

 

Yeah but the question is where then? Or where is the best spot for most accuracy?
