How do I paint my RAM?

Go to solution Solved by W-L,

Do you know if the Corsair Vengeance LP sticks have pads or paste?

All RAM sticks use thermal pads thermal paste wouldn't work well since it needs a certain thickness, usually it's easily easy to see by the edge of the heatspreader it's basically a thin sheet.

I recently bought 2 sticks of Corsair Vengeance LP ram. The color is black, and I want to paint it white. I also want to keep the stickers on (I was thinking of just using painter's tape for this). How do I remove the heat spreader? What type of paint should I use and what is the best way to go around doing this?

Linus uses Plasti-dip. Mainly because you can peal it off whenever you want after it cures.

In general any regular high quality spray paint will work, for removing the heatspreaders and the painting process I have a write up that goes over it here:

When I pull off the heat spreader, how do I put more adhesive/thermal interface material back on afterwards?

Depending on the type if you carefully remove them you can reapply it or you will need to get new thermal adhesive strips if they can't be reused.

Mine didn't have any so I have no idea... I'd just use the pads that are already there if there is some. No paste; havent ever seen it on ram.

Honestly I'd go with plastidip for this. You can get great results with it. Just mask off (really carefully, use an exacto to get it perfect) the sticker & parts you don't want painted, then peel off the masking really slowly after a few coats. Since it's non-permanent you can just peel it off if you screw it up =]

Where can I get new thermal paste/strips for my ram and is there a certain type of strip depending on each stick? I have two sticks of Corsair Vengeance LP ram.

Places like Performance PC's ModmyMods will have it, just basically take a measurement of the current thickness of the pads your have and purchase matching ones of the same thickness if needed. If you don't damage them or the adhesive during removal most times you can directly reuse it.

Heat gun (can be subbed out for hair dryer), thermal double sided tape/pad, paint.
Put the ram on a flat surface.

Hold the heat gun at least 5 inches away from the ram.
Turn on the heat gun (low) and pan the heat gun from one side of the ram to the other until the ram is hot to the touch (not burn to the touch but just hot enough).
Once hot to the touch, use a flathead and carefully pry the heatsink/casing apart from the ram. The slower the better.

If you want to reuse the thermal pad I advise you to peel the heat sink off slowly.
Go to a local metal works company and ask to see if they can sand blast the heat sink.
Once sand blasted, spray the heat sink with heat resistant paint (any kind, I prefer to use airbrush powder based paint). Then let it sit for at least an hour.
Put the thermal pad back on carefully making sure it's not touching the ram pcb or anything that can short the ram.

Put the heatsink/casing back on. Now your're done.
