Amazon Sues 1,114 'Fake Reviewers' For Hire

The online retailer claims "fraudulent reviewers" are using multiple accounts and ordering empty parcels to avoid detection.

 

Amazon is taking legal action against more than 1,100 people for allegedly posting fake reviews on its website.

The online retailer's lawsuit, filed in a state court in Seattle, cites 1,114 defendants for "tarnishing Amazon's brand for their own profit and the profit of a handful of dishonest sellers and manufacturers".

They all offered their services through website Fiverr.com, with most promising positive or five-star reviews for a seller's products.

The defendants - named as "John Does" in the lawsuit and referred to only by their usernames - offer to write "fraudulent" reviews for as little as $5 (£3.25), it is claimed.

Amazon said it takes the "credibility of its customer reviews very seriously" and said "an unhealthy ecosystem has developed outside of Amazon to supply reviews in exchange for payment".

 

 

My thoughts :  Crazy how they can do this but then again shows that you should not relay on the Amazon reviews anyway and get real reviews from forums or youtube or something.

Though, the credibility of Amazon reviews has always been an issue; I mean, I can write a review for an item on Amazon which I haven't even purchased through Amazon... 

 

My point being, I could head over to Amazon right now to write a review for a Retina MacBook Pro, which I've never used. That review being a negative, but believable (not just blatantly slagging Apple off, but a well written review saying 'mouse-pad unresponsive, slow, sluggish, poor build quality, poor battery life' etc. etc.) in an effort to ruin the products reputation and stop people from buying it. as a close-minded idiot would do As for me personally, I pay closer attention to the reviews of 3 stars and below than I do to the positive reviews.

I'm glad about this, misleading/lied reviews are irritating.

I'm assuming all these reviewers posted fake good reviews not bad one

probably both since you can pay them to write bad reviews on a rival product

Who relies on a single website review anyway? There's multiple website, it may not be as big of a company like amazon but info is still info.

I hope this won't effect the hilariously fake unverified reviews on ridiculously expensive market priced listings. Those are always good for a laugh and informative. ^_^

Good I hated seeing people say "Don't buy this Amazon is ripping you off the price is soo high go to newegg". When in reality it was the day after it came out so short supply high prices and it was sold by a 2nd party selling through Amazon not Amazon. Then they give it 1 star and make all there fake accounts agree and find it helpful

Though, the credibility of Amazon reviews has always been an issue; I mean, I can write a review for an item on Amazon which I haven't even purchased through Amazon... 

 

My point being, I could head over to Amazon right now to write a review for a Retina MacBook Pro, which I've never used. That review being a negative, but believable (not just blatantly slagging Apple off, but a well written review saying 'mouse-pad unresponsive, slow, sluggish, poor build quality, poor battery life' etc. etc.) in an effort to ruin the products reputation and stop people from buying it. as a close-minded idiot would do As for me personally, I pay closer attention to the reviews of 3 stars and below than I do to the positive reviews. 

but it also alows for people who bought it elseware to review

They introduced the Verified Purchase, but I agree. There is no reason to let people review something they didn't buy at Amazon.

They have a "verified purchase" tag on those reviews who have purchased the item through Amazon but apparently these guys are ordering empty parcels? So I'm guessing they get the tag but not actually pay for the item? Idk, something is up.

What does empty parcel even mean? Never heard of that before.

 

Many of the items sold through Amazon are from 3rd party sellers and Amazon just acts as the middle man.

From what I read the people hired buy the item via Amazon and then likely contacts the seller with the order# and shipping info so they can match it up with the info Amazon sends the seller, the seller then creates a shipment with a tracking number for amazon's records so they can see the seller has sent something but does not put anything in the package.

The seller likely pays the hired person the cost of the item + the fee for the review, the article mentioned some hired reviews get credit vouchers (likely before hand) so they don't have to pay for the item.
