Gaming Laptop 1080 or 4k?

Armymen

Hi,

I have a yoga 2 pro right now with a 4k display. Love how much room I have to multi task.

I plan to upgrade from my old dino PC, I7 930 (I7 first gen), to a gaming laptop.

Im looking at the Acer predator 15. It will have a nvidia 980m in it. But I have 2 choice. 1080 screen or 4k display.

My question is, if I get the 4k, if I play 1080 will I have like black bar arround?

4K for multi task in windows and watch movie is awsome. But for gaming I know it not as good. So how is it to game 1080 on a 4k display?

I games, but not as much as I did before. Im also in the military and a gaming laptop would suite me better. Dont plan to play on my leg. Lol. Im over the custom build tower. Time for laptop as the 980m is only about 20 % less powerfull the 980 for pc. So gaming laptop vs tower is getting pretty close gap now

This does not answer my initial questions. I know I want the Acer predator 15 already. My question is the 4k vs 1080 gaming. Play 1080 on a 4k display.

OMG how is nobody answering the question!? I would get a 1080p screen, but I don't think you'd get black bars with the 4k monitor

not really worried about the specs...they are fine

more the reliablity and quality of the parts used

4k on a laptop is completely utterly pointless.  No integrated GPU, even in SLI, will have enough horsepower to push 4k at any reasonable framerate, and since you want a gaming laptop and integrated video cards (of the same overall naming scheme) are about two generations in horsepower behind their desktop counterparts, 1080p will fit the bill.

A GeForce 980m is about 65% as fast as a desktop 980.  That puts it probably around GTX 680 speeds (which if I recall is about equal to GTX 770...wasn't that the rebrand of the 680?)

Desktop video card already have enough trouble driving 4k as it is.

Hi, thanks for all the advice. How is it if I use 4k for work, and only games in 4k?

Is there like black bar arround or it would look pretty similar as 4k is 4:1 of 1080?
