I CAN HELP!

Unfortunately, the word from Microsoft is that when you change your mobo, you HAVE to reinstall windows 10.

Let me continue. If you upgraded from windows 7 or 8.1, you MUST reinstall that version of windows and reupgrade (i suggest clean install since you have to technically do that anyway) in order to get your PC to be genuine again. I just went though this and i know your pain.

I can give details on how to make it quick and painless if you want, just let me know!

This will not work. I can confirm from a talk with Microsoft not 1 week ago about this same issue

You can clean install it but only if you put THAT version on your PC to begin with. If you upgraded then you HAVE to install the old version and upgrade

Perhaps just go back to using 7/8/8.1 where you can actually change parts of your pc without windows being a bitch?

the reason why is when you install windows it takes the unique key of the motherboard and saves it, checking it each time it boots up. So if you swap the motherboard out, windows assumes that its in a new pc and and this say the copy isn't genuine

100%. The only bad thing is that your windows key for 7 or 8,1 is unable to be used for windows 10. which means if you have 10, and you upgrade your pc, you can still use that key as long as you reformat to the original OS (7 or 8.1) and reupdate.

Understandable = Yes

Annoying = OH YEAH..... -_____________-

Yeah essentially you will have to format your SSD, then reinstall your original OS on your SSD.

Now here is where i recommend something many people probably don't. I recommend making sure you fresh windows 7/8.1 install is activated and then running the Media Creation Tool (link here) and running a clean install through it (by selecting keep nothing when prompted). That will give you a FRESH windows 10 install and then reset all of your docs/vids/pics etc... to the HDD.

Easy peasy just a PITA

Well it wouldn't be a PITA if I didn't have to wait 70000 years for 200 GB of games to be written to my HDD.....

I use my SSD and just create a separate partition.

This applies to 8.1, so perhaps it works for 10 as well:  you can call Microsoft Support and they can re-authorize your key.  From what I've heard, it's an automated process, you don't have to talk to a representative.  I'll be doing this for my 8.1 install this week, since I just upgraded my Mobo+CPU

Thats not a bad idea at all. I thought about doing that by i currently only have a 256gb SSD. I would run out of space.
