R9 390 vs GTX 970

CoolZakCZ
Go to solution Solved by thekeemo,

the drivers are great on the AMD side and all software (except gamestream) AMD has an equivalent for :)

heat output doesnt really matter unless

1) BIG overclocker

2) tiny case

and we havent even talked about async compute and multicard scaling...

So this seems like a debatable topic, and I haven't found any solid answers yet. I'm torn between a GTX 970 or a R9 390. These are some things I've seen so far that I'm interested in.

R9 390:

- 8GB of GDDR5

- Faster than the GTX 970

- More heat output

- More FPS in most games

GTX 970:

- Less power consumption

- Good drivers & comes with lots of cool software

- Less heat output

- Less FPS in most games

So, between all of these things, what is an all-around better card? Also, since I'll only be doing 60+ fps 1080p gaming, do I even need a 390/970? Or will a cheaper card do?

Thanks for the help!

Wow, one of the biggest reasons I was leaning towards the GTX was because of the software and drivers. I wasn't aware that AMD had counterparts, that should resolve my issue. :D

Well, thanks so much for the help!

I would get a 390 Nitro.

Edit: I was going to get a used 970 but I found an R9 290 for $170. Just keep in mind that Nvidia cards usually have higher resell value, but AMD cards still sell for a lot.

For 1440p the 390 and 390X will be better than the 970 but for 1080p the 970 is more than enough (but the 390(and 390X) would be a little better).

I've seen used 290xs for $160 USD up here in Canada :)

Damn, I was going to get a 290X, but the one and only one I saw for $230 on eBay was sold as I was going to buy it. But $170 for the next best thing isn't too bad.

Personally I'd go with the 390 (Well I did) because 8 GB and crossfire.

But I'm curious to see the general consensus around the forums since the DX12 debacle.

I'm going to follow this topic.
