Random PC Shutdowns

Hey all,

My fairly new custom PC (Under 1 YO) has recently ( over the last 2 - 3 days) been shutting down randomly and restarting with a message talking about ASUS Power Surge Protection having shut the system down to stop damage to the PC. ( It happened 3 - 4 times within an hour while playing DisHonored on max settings ). The PC is mainly used for Gaming, Game Creation, YouTube (Watching), and other general things such as Word Documents and Photos. I haven't overclocked anything past what I received it at (GPU Preset to OC Mode). I have already done some research about this and found that it could either be that my PSU is faulty (which I cant test because I don't have one to swap it with) or that ASUS Power Surge Protection is being over sensitive.

You can find my full PC specs on my profile. Although

ASUS Z97 Pro Gamer MOBO

EVGA Supernova NEX 750G (80+ Gold) PSU

Any help or opinions are greatly appreciated.

This can mean two things. Both a bit wierd IMO.

1. the Powersupply is failing to keep a steady DC current, and causing spikes in the power, which in turn, triggers ASUS's power surge protection.

or

2. your outlet is having a rave party, causing your PC to be the old man next door," yee hooligans better cut dat noice, or I'll call the cops!" and causes the ASUS's power surge protection.

Have you made sure you don't have a fork in the USB port?

you have your answer - the NEX PSUs are low quality - likely it's dying. take it out before it really does kill anything else.

@don_svetlio I am following, just doing some research on your post because I never seen/read that the power supply was a mad model.

Let me make this easier - Use this list http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/406160-psu-ranking-and-tiers/ or ask Aniallation himself :)

Look at tier 4 - the "meh" category - it's there under EVGA - NEX(G1) - it's the same level as thermalfake smart and corsair CX - both bad PSUs

Well - I cheaped out my PSU and got a 50Eu one - regretted it and had to spend another 110 eu for a new one afterwards. Trust me - cheaping out on a PSU almost always leads to regret. Get anything from Tier 2 if possible or tier 3 (though tier 3 is iffy sometimes)

Where I picked all my parts this EVGA PSU had a 4.6/5 rating from 40 people and none of them where bad comments. Guess its back to the PSU market for me :(

comment sections can be deceiving - my old PSU which I had to replace had a 5/5 rating by 10 people - didn't mean it didn't break :D

I agree your power supply is failing or you wall outlet is unstable but i doubt the outlet power you should see other issues in your house if you would see other items acting up. One thing you can do is test your outlet voltage and see if the volts are bouncing around or sticking around 110-120 anymore or any less will cause issues. One suggestion i have is get a watt monitor for you computer it has made finding a bad power supply easier for me.

He's in the UK - voltage from the wall there should be 230VAC - and it bouncing around with a decent PSU is not an issue - outlets here go from 190 to 250VAC and I'm not having shutdowns - it's definitely the PSU

Max PSU ranges are 90VAC to 264VAC for any decent PSU btw.
