144Hz Not Feeling Smooth

tikker

Recently I purchased the Asus VG248QE monitor. It is a 144Hz panel and I can set the refresh rate to 144Hz fine through both Windows and nVidia settings. I've been very happy with it so far, however after about a month I get the feeling that it's not truly running at 144Hz. Moving windows around the screen doesn't feel smooth. I recall seeing a 120Hz screen at a friends quite some time ago and I remember it looking much smoother. He also said that it didn't feel very smooth to him when he was over. Could it be just my imagination that I'm expecting too much or can it be something else? Is there a way to test if the monitor is truly running at 144Hz?

My GPU is a Galax GTX 970 HOF. The rest of the system is in my sig.

Edit:

The monitor is connected using the cable it came with, a dual link DVI-D.

Edit 2:

It does feel very smooth in e.g. the pre-menu intro of Metro 2033 Redux, here the FPS go to 150+ most of the time and the view feels really smooth. So it's mainly Windows that feels a tad jittery.

What connector are you using ?

dvi / hdmi / dp can slow the refresh even though windows thinks it's ok

Is it just in general or what games?

In general. Dragging around windows in Windows I recall to feel a lot smoother on the 120Hz screen of my friend that it does on mine. The games I play don't get near 144 FPS when maxed out. Though games seem to feel ok. I do get the feeling that Far Cry 4 feels a bit smoother when setting the ingame settings to 120Hz instead of 144Hz. I use the connector that came with the screen, a dual link DVI-D cable.

Does said monitor and GPU support DisplayPort?

That's the only option? :(

I'll try if I can find another cable to test as well. According to the OSD of the monitor it is running at 144Hz. I also do see an improvement when switching from 60 to 120/144. It's just not as much as I'd expected in my head.

No. Its just the best you can have atm.

Im sure there is a difference between 60 - 120 and 144hz on your Display. Just make sure your Display Runs at 144hz. Not only in Windows Options, you have to set the Display itself to 144hz. Maybe its default setting is 60hz. Check that first.

All settings point to that it is running at 144Hz Windows settings, nVidia control panel settings and the monitors OSD all tell 144Hz. Also games do feel smooth. In Metro 2033 I get 150+ FPS in some areas and there it goes like a hot knife through butter so it looks like it's mainly Windows that doesn't seem to run at that refresh rate.

When all 3 sources say 144hz, it is 144hz. And of course it feels better in Games than on the Desktop. More motion=more difference.
