R9 295x2 still a viable card for 1440p gaming? or just buy a new gpu like a Furys or 980Ti

LaboonTheWhale

Hey all

I forgot that the 295x2 even existed because of all the fury hype and was wondering if it was still even worthwhile grabbing that gpu. Especially when it sits at the same pricepoint as the new cards.

Is it still viable? Sure, it still plays games at good settings and such. Would I recommend it? No. It draws a lot of power (more than the PCIE specification) from the PEG connectors and it's more power hungry than either the Fury X or the GTX 980 Ti in the first place. You would also be dealing with scaling issues.

IMO, you should get a Fury (non-X) or a GTX 980 Ti.

It draws a lot of power (more than the PCIE specification) from the PEG connectors

Not really a big deal, and is easily resolved by running two separate strands

Very viable if you don't mind the power draw at full load and tinkering with it to make CF work.

another option noone is considering is

2x R9 380 4GB cards in Xfire. they give you fury (aircooled) and 980 (non ti) performance for about $150 US cheaper

a 295 is still an awesome card! who cares about the power draw and heat output.. its still the fastest thing on a single pcb.

if the price is right it makes sense.

its about £400 in the UK so £250 less than a 980ti.

in games that are well crossfire supported it will kick ass, non cfx supported games.. youll get single 290x performance, which isn't bad, its just not amazing today.

I had the choice, I went with the 980ti, but my choice was also made because I'd have had to have bought a new power supply to handle a 295 which would have meant I'd be spending the same as a 980ti sooo I just bought one of them instead

Gaming PC: • AMD Ryzen 7 3900x • 16gb Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3200mhz • Founders Edition 2080ti • 2x Crucial 1tb nvme ssd • NZXT H1• Logitech G915TKL • Logitech G Pro • Asus ROG XG32VQ • SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless

Laptop: MacBook Pro M1 512gb

just buy a GTX 980ti unless you don't mind having a card that sucks 650W from the wall...and also all the crossfire related issues (games that won't support dual GPU setups, micro-stuttering, frame-pacing issues all over the place, crashes etc.)

Its viable but I personally never thought it made much sense at all, even tho its price has dropped a lot and now there are more compelling things out there like the Fury X or 980Ti

4690K // 212 EVO // Z97-PRO // Vengeance 16GB // GTX 770 GTX 970 // MX100 128GB // Toshiba 1TB // Air 540 // HX650

Logitech G502 RGB // Corsair K65 RGB (MX Red)

Seriously... The OP's asking whether a particular graphics card is still a good card to buy and you're arguing about a specification. Whether AMD should have made their card as they did or not is irrelevant - the topic is about whether the OP will get a better experience using an R9 295X2 or a different card. If the consensus is that the R9 295X2 is the card to go for, then it is appropriate, as an aside, to remind the OP that he will need to take care when installing it. There's absolutely no point in arguing about whether that is anti-consumerist or not.

I didnt check LTTP in a day and I get 23 notifications.. .what happened.

I ended up in a discussion with another member over details pertaining to the R9 295x2, whereas it spun off topic and got a bit heated.

I thank the mods for clearing up the mess i left.

Bottom line.

As a R9 295x2 owner, the card works great for 1440p. I run at 3440x1440 and get 45-60+ FPS in almost all titles with max settings.

BUT, you MUST read the manual of the R9 295x2 PRIOR to using it. This is paramount!!!

You MUST have a powersupply with AT LEAST 2x 28amp 8pin 12v rails. YOU MUST NOT try to daisy-chain 2x 2+6pin connectors, if you do so, THE CARD WILL SET YOUR PC ON FIRE.

It MUST have 2 separate 8pin connectors.

the only PSUs i would reccomend, from personal experience with this card.

is Corsair AX 1200i, Corsair AX 1500i (the one i use) and Corsair HX 1000i (my best friend uses this with his R9 295x2).

Any PSU under 1000w, is NOT reccomended.

AMD themselves do NOT reccomend any PSU under 1500w on their official site (the info is there, its just a bitch to find it).

The Corsair AX 1200i has its 12v 8pin connectors limited to 20amp by default, you can use Corsair Link to increase this limit to 40 amps.

You should ONLY use the cables that comes with your PSU, do not use custom sleeved cables unless you KNOW that they can handle the load.

If you want custom cables, i can ONLY reccomend the Custom Sleeved cables from COrsair, as these is rated to be used with their powersupplies.

For more detailed information, send me a PM
