Did I mess up? Steam.

So I backed up my steamapps file to an external HDD but how in God's name do I get my games back onto Steam? I don't want to Download this all again.

In your steam settings menu, go to Downloads, then at the top click "Steam library folders", click "Add library folder" and select the backed up steamapps folder, I think that should do it.

Did you use the game backup tool within Steam or did you just copy your folder?

Install Steam as normal, than once its updated. Go into the Steam folder and put back the games into Steam\SteamApps\common. Than just go back to your library and normally install. Steam will automatically verifiy first if you have it in the common file.

put the folder where it should tell steam to download the games that you copied over it should find them do some verification and you will be good.

Okay. And what if I want the install path to be different? Because right now it's going to my C drive and I want it on my D drive.

Try this, does Steam detect your games after that? If not try restarting Steam, hopefully it will then.

 

Steam has terrible auto detect.

I tried that, didn't work. Sort of sick of all this so I'm just redownloading everything. Really sucks that I just lost all of those saves. :/ I hope in the future that Steam improves upon this. If I ever need to switch computers I do not want to go through this nightmare again. Fresh installs really suck. Dx

Next time use the backup tool in Steam. Steam - Backup and Restore Games. Guaranteed to work that way, with your save games you can just copy them across and the game will pick them up.

Should've copied the entire steam folder instead of just the steamapp folder. Then it's just a matter of launching steam and everything is still there.

 

Also, most of your saves were in the steam\userdata folder or in your documents. Rare are the games that still put the saves in the steamapp folder. So you had lost them in the first place.

Ah so I was screwed in the beginning. That sucks. xD Still hard though. Trying to bring back everything that was there before. Bring back my hardrive as my D drive, restoring all my apps, how does Steam not get confused when restoring it when the games aren't on the same drive it is installed on?

most games should save game to the cloud. so you probbly didn't loose anysave games.

Thats why linus/luke have trouble using the LMG steam before cause it would mess up benchmarking with save games.

not everything, just most.

san andreas doesn't save but thats a game from old times

just cause 2 did. grid 2 and autosport did. MOST do but not all sadly

Well most games I have aren't THAT old. Except for Doom and Kotor. Most of them are from 2007 onward.
