Nikon D3300 and another lens or Nikon D5500 with stock lens

Hi, I am thinking of getting a new DSLR as my current $100 point and shoot is dying on me. I thought of getting a Nikon D3300 with another lens or a Nikon D5500 without a separate lens. Which one would you think I should get? If there are any other suggestions feel free to comment below! (Im not only set on Nikons so Canon or other branded suggestions are welcome)

Thanks!

EDIT: For the lens, Im a still unsure of what lens to get, so if theres any recommendation feel free to reply!

its a Nikkor I have one. it doesnt really suit my needs will give you good bokeh but I do automotive photography and I cannot get a car entirely in fame and bokeh with it.

Its become my close up details lens.

@Nexxus Those are some nice shots! Thanks for your knowledge. Just wondering, what camera did you use to take those shots?

I think I have decided on getting the D3300 with another lens as after researching more in depth, I realised that lens can be kept ans hold its value better than the body. Now that I've decided on the camera, what lens would you recommend? Leave a reply below foe your suggestion!

Thanks for the help, really appreciate it!

i dont have a ton of experience with lenses...just have 2 but the thing you need to tell us to help you is what you primarily focus on shooting.

For portrait the 35 f1,8 or 50 f1.8 would be good choice

(50mm on the d3300 gives you 75mm, not far off 85mm which is my preferred portrait focal length - 35mm is 52,5mm)

for macro, you can either look into a dedicated macro lens, OR, you can get an adapter that lets you reverse your lens giving you basically a free macro lens

@ShadowCaptain Thanks for the suggestions, I'll do some research about them. Are there specific brands to go for and stay away from? And also, are the adapters cheap? Thanks!

Nikons own 35mm and 50mm are cheap and very good, other brands or lenses are Tamron and Sigma

lens reversing rings? yeah they are just a plastic ring :P

I have the previous model of the 3300 (the 3200) and i love it, great entry level camera. I would recommend you add the 3200 to your shopping list as it's basically the same as the 3300 which has a few minor changes, (a different kit lens, the ability to to take panoramic shots and a Couple of other things). Which impacts on the higher price of the 3300.

So if money is tight get the 3200 with a 50mm 1.8 lens for portraits, I personally find the 35mm 1.8 to wide, but that's not to say its a great lens. Cash saved getting the 3200 will help pay for a macro lens too or more importantly a tripod, which will help your photography no end. I can't say which lens for macro as I never delved into it. From what I have read and the video's I have i seen, it's far too finicky and you need lots of patience.

if you're just going to end up with a 35 or 50mm 1.8 I would get the best body you can afford since those lenses are relatively cheap.

@ShadowCaptain Just to make sure, the 35mm f1.8 and 50m f1.8 only have a single focal length and I can't zoom with it right? Sorry for the noob questions

@Koffehh The shop that I plan to buy the camera from currently does not have the D3200. Maybe I can buy it from online stores. Thanks for the tip!

@SLOWION What are the approximate prices of those lens?

You can either go with a 35mm or 55mm f1.8 fixed focal lenght lens (plastic fantastic). Fixed focal lenght lenses will give you very sharp images but the downside is that they can't zoom.

Or you can go for a 16-85mm f3.5 - 5.6 witch will give you a nice zoom (not too much) and a awesome picture! Its a bit more expensive but thats how it goes.

All three lenses are nikkor lenses, I don't have experience with other brands yet.

That said, I would go for the D3300 + better lens.

About $199 USD a piece

35mm 1.8

50mm 1.8

The 35mm 1.8 is very good for general, everyday photography IMO. I have one with my D5300 and it's great
