The International 5 Dota 2 Championships Prize Pool Reaches $7.2 million

... and counting.

Last years prize pool was more than 10 million dollars, and this year the prize pool is projected to reach 17 million dollars.

So because I decided to enter all the data from TI5's prize pool into Desmos (seriously check it out if you like messing with graphs).

I gathered the data from Cyborgmatt's website and typed it all in manually, excluding the first 16 hours that were linearly generated as no data was released for this period. Then I let Desmos do the rest and created a logarithmic regression based on all the data up to when this was posted. Extrapolating to 100 days this gives an expected prize pool of $15.23 million.

I then also repeated this process for TI4's prize pool (up until day 16, after which it jumps due to immortal releases which would not lend itself nicely to a standard equation). However going just by these first few weeks it estimates $9.58 million ($1.35 million short of the actual final figure).

If we assume that the extra boost from immortals is only a linear 'step up' (i.e. does not affect the rate at which prize pool increases after the surge) and multiply by 1.5 (approximately how much bigger the prize pool is this year) we have a rough figure to add on to this year's estimate to account for any major stretch goal boosts.

At day 100 the graph estimates the prize pool to stand at $15.23 million, plus our $2.03 million addition from stretch goals. Giving a final estimated prize pool a value of $17.26 million.

The graph in question if you wish to view it can be found here or in simple image form here. (Ignore purple line, that was just for entering the data without having to divide every term by 64 to make the scales match).

Tl;dr: This model which only relies on past data and doesn't actually have the ability to see into the future predicts a final prize pool of $17.26 million USD.

EDIT: So in case anyone is still reading this, I messed up the function - should have divided by 48 (half hours in a day) not 64! (It was 2am ok?) Which puts the estimate at $0.79 million lower (for a total of $16.47 million).

However I should also mention since more data has been added the curve has dropped a lot. Guess that's what you get when using data from a short time scale.

Being a LoL player, I've always admired the way the price pool system works in DotA 2, just awesome.

So DotA 2 doesn't even require so much skill and hits a 17 million prize pool and 10-20 million viewers, while a game such as CS:GO only managed to hit 1 million on ESL ESEA and a million viewers max. I don't even.

Volvo pls

Valve are too good at selling dem hats

you know that LoL could have that too right? They just give salary to the players who play in the LCS

Does LCS really pay the players? I thought the teams/sponsors paid them.

But still, the Top teams are still going to earn way more money than any other LoL teams overall.

Yay For DOTA ...

I wish my computer can run Dota 2 properly ....

... Life is a game and the checkpoints are your birthday , you will face challenges where you may not get rewarded afterwords but those are the challenges that help you improve yourself . Always live for tomorrow because you may never know when your game will be over ... I'm totally not going insane in anyway , shape or form ... I just have broken English and an open mind ...

No, the main difference between pro Dota 2 and LoL is that Riot has built up LoL's pro scene, whereas Valve has only hosts the biggest tournament on the scene once a year.

Dota 2 players are usually paid by a sponsor or organization.

I'm telling the truth! I AM a 12 year old girl!

are you serious? DOTA is so much HARDER to learn and SO MUCH harder to master, youve never played dota, ALOT of dota players have over 2000 hours and i have 3.2k and most of them are avg, anyone with 3.2k hours in csgo would be atleast LEM-Global easily i guarantee you that (i have 400 hours, mostly surfing, 100 hours of dm and mm and i was dmg before the vac waves) so dont talk shit if you dont know shit.
