How good is FSX Steam?

NeatSquidYT

hi,

So FSX on Steam is really cheap this weekend, and I've always been interested in flight sims, but have never played one. My question is, for a flight sim noob, what do you do? Just fly? Can you get to cities and fly over them?

Thanks

@NeatSquidYT There's a buuuuuuuuuuuuunch of missions that you can do which start off as tutorials to get you figuring out how to fly, and progress in to challenges to test your skills.

One thing I personally like doing is practicing my landing in various aircraft and conditions so I'll pick a location I've never been to for the scenery and clear weather until I'm confident with my landings to that airport and gradually increase difficulty with heavier rain, snow, fog, winds, etc.

If you ever want a random thing to do you can PM and I can think of a few things. :)

For the open world element, can you fly over cities?

It's an entire globe that you can fly over, yes.

HALLELUJAH. I'll be buying it today then. Are mouse and keyboard controls alright until I can get a joystick?

You better have some decent area for your mouse to move around in, that's all I'm going to say.

It's basically an updated version of the original. Smoother game play than the boxed version and at $5 I got the steam version myself. I still have the boxed version on my computer. The steam version included all the service packs and the acceleration pack.

its decent its still finicky as hell because things run in like a billion windows in that game..its odd. you can use kb and mouse if you want but you are going to want a stick ASAP the mouse controls are...useable thats the best I can say about that.

Make sure you go to AVSIM.COM for airplanes and scenery upgrades. Here is a link for the best free 757. It has the Honeywell navigation and it adds voice to call out elevation on approaches with a detailed cockpit and gauges. http://www.justflight.com/product/757-jetliner-freemium

The multiplayer is great fun. I have a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro for FSX. A decent joystick makes the game much more enjoyable.

looks like a decent joystick, but I was thinking of one with a throttle thing like http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001CXYMFS/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=569136327&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00CJ5FPTA&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=0FMCQ7DX4Y2ZCF459SM1or http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0001ZN4WU/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=569136327&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00CJ5FPTA&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=0KWNZZA02VKNXF1XYCN8

I wish I had another $4 on my Steam account to buy it. :(

Looks like two good choices for a joystick with a big thrust lever.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I wish my CD keys would work but apparently they don't. So depressing.

Here is the best free plane I have on FSX. It's a 757 and it's a very nice upgrade from the stock planes. It's got the Honeywell navigation and it calls out altitude and wind shear. The cockpit is high definition. I don't like the concept of many of those addon companies selling crap for $80 per plane or $90 for scenery. The goal should be to get people interested in flying not to charge an arm and a leg to start. Besides the community supports FSX and many do custom free planes and scenery that you can download.
