280, 285, 280X or 7970?

I would suggest waiting until the latest AMD GPUs are released.

If you cant, I would get the 285 as it is slightly newer than the 280 and performs better.

I believe its cheaper than the 280X too.

I currently have a 7870XT but it's loud, hot and suffers from thermal throttling.

What would the best upgrade path be for me?

My GPU History: GTS 250, 7790, 7850, GTX 660ti, 7870XT, 7970, 280X, 280X Crossfire, 290, 290X, Fury X, 390 Crossfire, Fury Crossfire, 1070, 1080, 1080ti.

My CPU History: Pentium 4, Pentium E5300, Core 2 Quad QX 9650, Intel Xeon 1230 v3, 4790K, 3930K, 5820K, 1700, 3700X.

all the above GPU choices are not really a big upgrade to me

R9 290/X will be considered to be upgrade

see how much is the GTX970 you can afford

7870xt = ~270(x)

280 = 7950

280x = 7970

285 = around a 280 performance level, but newer and only 2GB vram.

If it's loud/hot you should clean it out and or get better airflow in your case.

If you need to upgrade you should get a 280x in my opinion.

Depending on your budget. I'd look at getting a 290. Or if you can really afford it a 970. While all those cards would be an upgrade to your current card I don't think itd be worth the $250.

GTX 970 don't look further.

I'm going with AMD because I usually try and support underdogs (Also I prefer the company culture and know a few employees)

So the 970 isn't an option.

If it's loud/hot you should clean it out and or get better airflow in your case.

The reason it's hot is because it has a single fan, my airflow is fine, and even with the case door off it still throttles back to 800Mhz sometimes.

A tri x r9 290 would be [A good upgrade].

I have considered a 290, but I am planning on getting a 300 series card when they are released in the next 6 months, but I cannot stand the insanely bad performance of this card so I need something to tide me over.

What's your budget?

I know somewhere where I can resell at near retail price so that's not an issue, but I cant go with a 290 as my PSU won't quite reach that far (Has a pretty weak 12V rail too)

I really just need to know if the advantages of the 285 justify the 2GB vram, and if not would going with a 7970 instead of a 280X (Same core but with a few driver/technology improvements in the 280X that aren't included with the 7970 for some reason [Wtf]) would be justifiable.

oh now i see your issue

you better replace both your PSU and GPU together

That's the plan, but I want to get something to last me just until the next generation. A friend of mine is buying whatever card I get now at 10% less than I bought it for

Id get the cheapest one if you're really just looking for a card that suits you till the 300 series. I dont know what the real benefits of the r9 285 are, the only thing i know is that it can use true audio. Honestly id prefer the 280 for more vram.

Your 7870xt is like a downclocked 7950 id say, some people that reccomended it to me like a year ago called it the 7930. You wont see a huge performance difference between even the 280x and your current one, probably not worth it unless you really know you can sell it for a good price.

I've decided on the 285. VSR is a big thing for me, and I only game at 1080p so 2GB of vram is enough. It works out about $10 cheaper than the 280X and apparently its's pretty good at overclocking.
