Cops can make you unlock your phone if you use your fingerprint to unlock.

Tygron

I don't understand why people don't just use passwords. It's not like passwords are hard to remember.

Takes longer to unlock. When I use my fingerprint, my phone is already unlocked by the time its out of my pocket. I'm not lying when I say its actually faster than having no password at all because then you need to swipe the lock screen away.

Shaker Aamer : Arrested in 2002, still in captivity without charge or trial. The Bush administration acknowledged that it had no evidence against Aamer, so they cleared him for release in 2007. He's still in there.

Abdelaziz Kareem Salim Al-Noofayee : Arrested in 2002 for wearing a Casio watch. Spent 7 years in Guantanamo, then repatriated to Saudi Arabia

That's just 2 in the "Guantanamo Bay detainees whose surnames begin with A" section on Wikipedia. Want me to go all the way to Z ?

Oh you're talking about non US citizens.

But I'm with you on Getmo, it is wrong.

I guess that makes sense. I use the "Connect the dots" password thing that Android has. I like that.

...so if everyone just used a passcode lock on their houses instead of conventional keys the police couldn't use a warrant to gain entry? No part of this makes sense.

They are still allowed to try to break in. If you had an impenetrable fortress and the only way in was with a passcode then yes, you could just say "I won't give you the code" and they wouldn't be able to get into your home.

The reason why they can't just break into the phone is because the encryption we have today is so strong you can't break it.

AFAIK, the sensor that Apple uses is at least good enough that it requires an active current on your finger to work. Aka chopped off fingers won't work cause they are dead.

But someone can correct me on that one.

The other thing to do is to force a reboot of the phone, cause at least TouchID doesn't work after a reboot until you enter in your passcode, only after that does it enable. Not sure if Samsungs implantation does the same or not.

I believe the important thing to note here is that despite the wording of the article's title and first paragraph, cops can't force you to provide your fingerprint to look at your phone (they still need a court order and maybe even a warrant to do so).

To be honest though, I find it a crazy concept that you are allowed to withhold passwords.  We are entering the age where it is nearly impossible to access certain data without the correct password, and I don't buy the whole "self incriminating" concept.  We live in a digital age, and the fifth amendment just wasn't designed with the concept that things such as passwords might the only key to getting data.

Glad I don't have an iPhone (yet)... Honestly, all people have to do is not use the TouchID.

They usually dump all the data off your phone when they have a warrant. No different. i.e. when looking for evidence of child porn, they'll look at your phone without your permission.

That won't work with encrypted devices though (like iPhones). Without the password they can't see anything.
