Sennheiser Momentum vs Audio Technica ATH-M50

mrswagbhinav
Go to solution Solved by SpaceSquid,

Yep either going with DT 770 or the HD 598. Can you recommend me any sub-50 dollar amps.

Just save up and get a Fiio E10K, you can also save some money by foam modding the 558s, they won't sound as good as the 598s but much better than the 558s

I want to get some headphones for under $200. The Sennheiser Momentum On-Ear and ATH M50s seem to be the best choice. I listen to everything from Skrillex to Drake to Daft Punk. Also do you think the Over-Ear versions of the Momentums are really worth the extra $100?

Hm...

Well, I have tried the M50's in the past, but not the Momentums. The thing with the Momentums is, even though Sennheiser is known for their sound quality, judging by reviews I've seen in the past, it seems that Sennheiser focused more on design than sound.

The M50's are a GREAT pair of headphones (especially the red ones). Again, I have not used the Momentums, but I would still say go with the M50's. :)

Both headphones are a nice choice. I have the m50s and I really recommend them. They are really nicely built, suit my music taste quite well (Glitch Hop, House, Rap, Rock, Alternative), and they are cheap

Like you, I listen to a bit of everything, and I'd say the M50s are a solid choice. I may be wrong, but I feel like the Momentums are kind of an oxymoron of what Sennheiser is known for. The Momentums are more of a form over function pair of headphones, compared to the aim for the best sound over everything else that is usually standard with Sennheiser. Don't get me wrong, they're a good pair of cans, just not as good as they could be.

I haven't made my final decision yet, but is the M50X any different from the M50 in sound quality?

No, if it ain't broke don't fix it, the pads are a little more comfortable(depends on the person) and detachable cable, if you are gonna use them out of the house get the M50x but if they are at your computer all day long, ATH M50 + fiio e10k

Muh rig: i7 4770k, Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo, MSI Z87 G45, Kingston Hyper X Blu 8GB, Samsung 840 EVO 120 + WD Blue 1 TB, Asus GTX 770 2GB, Corsair 200r + 2x Corsair AF 120 Blue + 1x Stock corsair fan, Corsair TX650, LG 27EA33V IPS, Steelseries Sensei Raw + QCK mini, CM Quickfire Ultimate Blue.

Have you considered the ATH-PRO700MK2

I can confirm they are BANGIN' w00t.gif

They are a tight fit though, but with a few simple mods, they are much better.

I don't think there is a difference on the audio level. The only difference is the detachable cable, new color (which is ugly, IMO) and possibly the pads as @SpaceSquid said. However, you're gonna want to get different pads anyways, as the stock ones are pretty bad. Mine started hardening within 6 months of having the headphones. You can buy some velour pads that are 100x better than stock. Even if the stock pads on the M50x are better than on the normal M50/M50s, you will still want to buy some Shure 940 pads or the velour Ath-m50 pads from Sound Professionals since they are so much better.

Also, I personally don't think that the M50x are any better. The detachable cable is not compatible with regular 3.5mm cables, so you can't buy aftermarket cables with mic control or anything. On top of that, there is a fairly common mod that is done to the non-x M50s that makes the cable removable  (effectively getting rid of the only reason to get the M50x). Also, if you go that route, they are compatible with 3.5 cables. The mod is relatively simple job, but requires minimal soldering. Nothing major though. (I did it on mine, with no previous soldering experience, in about 30 minutes).

Here is a link to a Head-fi topic on it - http://www.head-fi.org/t/553483/ath-m50-removable-cable-mod

TL;DR save the money. Get the m50/m50s and a nice pair of pads

Now im pretty much settled for the ATH M50 and fiio 10K. Just one last thing lol. For a mic Im getting a Blue Yeti but is the Snowball a competitor because I would love to spend $50 less.

Cant help you with that second question..

However, The M50s don't really need an amp. At 35ohms, they're pretty easy to drive. Also, I have an E11 and I don't hear a difference.

Edit: the e10k is an amp as well as a DAC too, disregard last comment

What are you going to be using your mic for? Are you a streamer or a youtuber? The zalman clip on is a good choice for people who just use it to chat with their friends when gaming

You can't use M50 outside your house,Sennheiser Mommentum is portable but not as comfortable as M50 because it's on ear.You can use the momentums for 1 hour and after that your ears begin to hurt.As for audio quality M50 is the winner,Momentum is not far behind.

I have the Sennisher HD558 and wow they sound awesome, Luke uses the bigger brother HD598. I have to highly recommend these as I love them for gaming or any other activity I do on the computer and they are so comfortable, I forget I'm wearing them.

The HD 558s are also a good option as @Agent Maine said, they are more comfortable than the m50s and better for gaming because they have a better soundstage, but they leak sound and you can hear whats going on around you.

Neither, grab some m40x's if you want AT, but DT 770's would sound better than both for that kind of music.
