Nvidia Lying About Maxwell GTX 980 Specs To Press.

It's very funny when you think about it but Nvidia actually sent both of the following images to the press to cover the Maxwell launch.
And the images below have conflicting information.

t66gCdv.jpg

hFqt7Bw.jpg

These figures are for the total system power consumption. So they're naturally going to be higher than the GPU's power consumption alone. That's not the issue.
However compare the GTX 980 and the GTX 680. According to Nvidia the GTX 980 consumes 30W less but we clearly see in the graph above that the GTX 980 actually consumes 12 watts more than the GTX 680. Which actually makes it a 207W card not a 165W card.

Then Nvidia does some questionable math to arrive at the 2X performance/w improvement headline. Nvidia divides the TFLOPs by the power to get the performance per watt.
So 5 TFLOPS/165W = 30 GFLOPS/W which is twice what the 680 is capable of. Which is simply wrong.

Now if you argue that 165W TDP is actually the heat output for the GTX 980 and not power consumption and that the TDP (Thermal Design Power) actually doesn't have to represent power consumption. Then there is something very clearly wrong here because you can't use a measure of heat to get performance/w. The TDP obviously represents power consumption to Nvidia because they used it to measure performance/w. Again performance/TDP = 5 TFLOPS/165 = performance/w = 30 GFLOPS/W .

I am very sure those charts are for entire systems, since it is physically impossible to pull 167W from a PCI-E slot (it would probably go on fire.)

Seems I am wrong, but @LukaP makes a good point.

Nvidia's official spec is what to go off of in the first place and nothing else until we see an official benchmark.

TDP =/= Power consumption

Edit:

To clarify, TDP is what a card is designed to output as heat. now on similar architectures, this can be used to compare power consumption.

the fact that maxwell has a lower TDP at the sameish power consumtion just means less energy is wasted as heat, and more is used for calculations :)

Sorry but Nvidia CLEARLY states power NOT TDP.

I doubt this is true.. ther'd be no reason for them to lie, as amd's latest cards arnt exactly efficient and don't run very cool

Well said, To add to that TDP and power consumption are somewhat related, but they are not the same like you've mentioned.

It's ok everyone. Nvidia can lie all they want because people like @LukaP will have you convinced that power isn't power consumption but actually something else. And performance/watt isn't a measure of power efficiency no it's actually a measure of performance/heat everyone. Whatever that is...

Sorry but Nvidia CLEARLY states power NOT TDP.

NVIDIA also states the official TDP of the GTX 680 as 195W, so I am sure by this that they are speaking of TDP.

im not saying they are telling the truth. im saying that they arent lying, just using their vocabulary to their advantage...
