gtx 760 vs r9 280

Thats what I mean.......by my standards anything under 60fps @ 1080p on max settings isnt reasonable for me.

60fps is optimal as you are not missing any frames on a 60Hz monitor. You can word it however you want but the fact is and I think you agree that anything under 60fps on a 60hz monitor is not optimal. I can still play games all the way down to 30fps but I don't enjoy it and I refuse to play anything that dips below 60fps.

Well ya thats my point. In 3 years I seriously doubt a 280 will play premium games at 60fps max or high settings. If someone doesn't mind playing at 30fps then its no big deal. If someone is going to play pc games at 30 fps all the time on 1080p they might as well be on console imo and not have to worry about hardware upgrades.

I think you misunderstood my original post or I didn't word it properly.

You can't be serious.  Hyperthreading is a market joke?

I have to buy a gpu for my system. So i have to choose one of these. I am an Nvidia fan but the r9 280 is really promising and is almost in the same price. In my country the r9 280 is 30euros cheaper than the gtx 760 but the r9 280x is 40euros more expensive than the gtx 760. If i had the money for the r9 280x i would go with that but my budget is really really tight... Generally i don't want to spend more than 220euros(almost 250$) for gpu. And in some years maybe i will go for two gpu's(sli or crossfire).

Now there is, also, the asus r9 280 strix oc edition 15euros more expensive than the gtx 760 and i don't know if it's worth the more money cause if it does i am willing to spend these 15euros(spesifically if i will buy the gtx 760 gpu i will go with the gigabyte windforce 3x oc edition in 250euros and if i will buy with the r9 280 i will go with the asus directcu II top edition in 195euros).

I have seen some benchmarks and reviews but they seem amlost similar. Nvidia has much much better drivers and updates than amd when it comes to gpu's and the gtx 760 has better clock speeds than the r9 280, but i really like the fact that the r9 280 has 3gb memory instead of the 2gb memory in gtx 760 and the memory buss is higher in r9 280.

What's your opinion and why?

MY build:

asus maximus vii ranger

kingston hyperx fury 8gb 1866mHz(2x4gb)

wd caviar blue 1tb

corsair cx750m (750w and modular psu)

corsair carbide 200r case

280 is nearly equivalent to a 770, I'd get it over the 760

Hey,,,...

If you are just about gaming... Then for Sure, GO with a AMD Card...

And If you want to do for like video editing... And more stuff like that... Then It's Nvidia who has PhysX, And More...

And Also their driver support is good...

Just Install GeForce Experince... From their Site... I'll notify you when updates comes for rig...

If I had to choose, I'll go with the Nvidia...

Are you saying the will crap out and die after three years of use or that they will no longer offer reasonably playable framerates after three years ? Oh and the GTX 690 is a three year old card and it will play all modern games.

That is a dual gpu card. to be completely fair. sure the 7950 is 2.5 years old. but a mid tier card is different froma high end card.

OT: r9 280 is a really solid card

Well, generally, i don't trust used items especially computer parts cause nobody says the exact use time... Computer parts have a life span which depends on the use (hardcore use means less life span) and the time being used so i am not gonna buy a used gpu.

As for your thought it sounds good but i dont like selling my gpu to buy a new one... it's to complicated. I would like to buy a new gpu now and maybe in 2-3 years, depending on the money i make(cause i am a university studen so i don't make a lot of money), i will buy another gpu for sli/crossfire or a better one to replace my existing gpu.

I understand that it's hard to sell it but is better than nothing. You will spend more if you don't sell it, just ebay it or post it in Craiglist. So you get some money and now you don't spend that much for a brand new GPU

Get the 280 but dont get the asus, asus has a bad reputation for using nvidia based coolers on amd cards or sometimes the heatsink doesnt line up with the chip and can cause overheating and system shutdowns

No that's not the reason.

The 660 TI beat the HD 7950 which only clocked at a miserable 800mhz. After the 660 Ti was released AMD launched the 7950 boost, which was clocked at 925mhz and it beat the 660 Ti.

After the October never settle drivers the 7950 boost also beat the 670.

This only counts for the 290 and 290X direct CU II cards.

Not for the the other 200 series.

the 280 is a totaly diffrent card, diffrent chip.

The Direct CU II top cooler is totaly fine on the 280.

i have never seen an 7950 / 7970 direct CU II with those thermal issues.

Since the 280 = 7950.

Even with the Boost edition 660Ti is still slightly ahead IIRC, it's all because of the frame latency issue. They ironed out the issue a couple of months after Never Settle driver and improved the memory management, now 7950/280 driver is really good.

Apparently 12 vram modules are not covered by any heatsink on the 280x.

Considering these are rebadged cards; is there such noticeable difference in quality of drivers after all this time?

This is the first time i heard about this, thanks.

Something to investigate furter then.

i know alot people who have a 7970 direct CUII  top and also matrix, who never had any single problem with it.

They even use this card for open CL workloads.

Maybe its an manufacturing problem, from the last year or something idk.

At least i have never heard from this issue before. only on the R9-290 and R9-290x series. who have issues with the Direct CU II cooler.

But i have to say im more a fan of the Sappi´s. :D

To my knowledge its usually only an issue with certain coolers. I've got the sapphire 280x dual-x and have had zero overheating or artifact issues. Most complaints I've seen have been about specific XFX and Asus coolers not covering the vrm's, I seriously doubt its an issue with 'all' coolers for the 280x cards...

I'm not sure if any coolers have this issue on the regular 280

It all depends on what you pay for a card and also want from a card.  The 280s will be faster but in going AMD you give up physX.  You also get worse drivers/more driver issues.  I say sell some things or save up a bit more coin and get a GTX 770 or better or go SLI and maybe at the time the cards you will be looking at will be more affordable.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S
