[Build Log] Satan's Cave Project

post-81583-0-57539400-1404985445.png

Welcome to my first project build log!
some of you may already know what this project is going to be about, but for those who don't know, let me explain real quickly.

post-81583-0-81073800-1404985643.png

that's the idea, building a desk, throwing in my current parts, i'll list those in a moment. Also, it will be "degradable" in the form of the ability to easily add watercooling stuff later on.
i want to try and get this peace of glass in the middle, with a glowing red tube, and a aluminium plate with the logo of this build

post-81583-0-62247800-1404985839.png

here are the parts i'll be using, they're just from my "old" pc:
cpu: AMD FX6300
mobo: ASRock Fatal1ty killer
gpu: MSI r9 270
ram: g.skill ripjaws 2x4 kit
psu: corsair cx500m
storage: 240gb ssd (maybe some modding on this one? :D) and a 1tb seagate hdd
cooling: i'll take the 4 zalman 12mm red led fans out of my case. my cpu cooler is a Prolimatech Panther. I won't blame you if you've never heard of that :P

so i guess that's pretty much it, without any furder a don't (hehe, watched a little too much RayWilliamJohnson ;)), let's get the party rocking!

so as with every other pc build out there, let's start with the peripherals.
Wait what? okay maybe not like "every other build", but i am going to start with the keyboard, since i can't actually do anything to the main build until the actual desk is build.
So i own a cmstorm quickfire ultimate, and i wanted to try and color the backplate to match the led's, which is red (duh), because the quickfire tk does have this and it looks STUNNING.
so i got myself some spraypaint, and let's get this going :D

Gawwd it's dirty..

post-81583-0-37510700-1404987565.jpg

that's better :)

post-81583-0-93806100-1404987581.jpg

now let's mummify it, so the electronics and switches won't get painted (as much)

post-81583-0-84282500-1404987592.jpg

after 2 rounds of spraying, it looks a little something like this

post-81583-0-36911300-1404987614.jpg

done! i sprayed it 3 times, let it dry and took the tape off.

post-81583-0-20847200-1404987624.jpg

crossed fingers, plugged the cable in the pc, and she shiiiines :D

post-81583-0-51185000-1404987643.jpg

put on the keys and there we go, the first part of this project is completed!

post-81583-0-41339900-1404987853.jpg

now i know that it is a little orangy but since it's underneath the keys and only meant as reflection for the led's, i'm not going to redo everything.

so far, i'm pretty satisfied, knowing i have two left hands ;)

anyways, thanks for your attention and if you have any questions, feel free to ask! :)

cheers!

I might consider doing this with a Logitech keyboard when I get my hands on one.

Hopefully it turns out this good.

well thanks for the compliments :) it's not hard though, you just need to be patient. make sure everthing you don't want to paint such as switches and electronics are covered. even then it isn't to big of a deal, i accidentally sprayed a couple of switches and 3 led's for a little bit and as you can see it works just fine.

one thinks i did learn though is that 3 thin layers of spraypaint are waaaay better than 1 think layer, so don't try to get everything painted in the first wave, or you'll find yourself having 2 hours waiting for it to dry.

hope that helped a little, good luck! :)

Update time!

i'm pretty disappointed about this myself, but i have to announce that there is exactly 0.0% progress on the desk itself.. :(

part of the reason is because my dad is very busy and can't find the time to buy the wood for the desk.

on the other side, i also have a job now, so i can increase the headroom i have for this build financially wise :D

also, i finished school better than expected, and that has it's consequences $_$ ;)

i didn't want to post nothing for two whole weeks, and i did work on some things, so let me show you what i have been busy doing for the last 2 weeks.

my dad decided to clean up the house and toss everything unneeded/unwanted, which ofcourse gave me the opportunity to gather usefull stuff.

an old door was going to the slaughterhouse, and it had 8 pieces of glass in it, which i took ofcourse :)

also a broken electric piano was going out, so i stole the speakers. i have no experience in wiring things together etc, so i was about to blow up the house my soldering these speakers to my pc. Luckily my dad told me that that wasn't going to work and that i need another piece of hardware. that isn't the priority right now, maybe it's fun to drill inside the desk when everything else is finished, but for now i'm not going to bother too much about them.

post-81583-0-43414800-1406037284_thumb.j

glass panel with the stuff on the sides stripped off

post-81583-0-90688700-1406037340_thumb.j

the plates are just a bit bigger than a motherboard so they are basically perfect to use as a motherboard tray.

my dad used to clean the glass when the door was still in use, but he did it with one of these stupid sponges that put scratches all over the glass, so i'll have to clean them all and have a look at which one is least damaged

post-81583-0-04402600-1406038376.jpg

i also worked on a phone dock.

post-81583-0-67682300-1406038461_thumb.j

the lines in the middle are going to be cut out using a saw, this is where the phone sits. the other two ending lines, top left and bottom right, are going to have ( if everything works out the way i want it) plexi in it, with an led drilled into it, so it gives a nice red glow

quick sketchup model to give you a general idea.

post-81583-0-40126100-1406040407_thumb.p

okay so this one was kind of unfortunate. While i was working on the dock, the phone  that the dock is for dropped. face down, screen shattered.

my dad and i opened up the phone to see what was still intact and what needed to be replaced, and lucky me, it's only gonna cost me about 20 bux.

this is what she looks like right now..

post-81583-0-54929400-1406039311_thumb.j

so yeah.. that's probably my priority right now.

that's also all that has happened since last time, please forgive me about the long space in between the updates. i can't tell when my dad finds the time to go buy the wood with me, but until then i will save up money and work on the dock, which the next update(s) are probably going to mostly about.

that's all i got, thanks for your time and i'll seeyou next time!

well i won't actually see you

because you're behind your computer

or phone

but what if i'm a hacker > :)

that would be creepy

this is getting awkward..

bye..

;)

Great God, what's this? another update?
Yeah, i want to make up for the lack of updates over the last two weeks, so instead of posting more every once in a while, i'll post less more frequently.
So i started working on the phone dock, which is kind of not practical at some points because it's useful to actually testfit, and well, my phone isn't really in the best shape to do so :(

Now, some pica's (not pokémons, pictures)

first cut has been made :D

post-81583-0-14887800-1406062097_thumb.j

The part where the phone will rest is probably fine this way, will have to test it once my phone is one piece again.
also i cut out where the upper plexi plate thingy will go.

overall look of where we are now

post-81583-0-16378200-1406062310_thumb.j

hehe, it doesn't work all that well when you try to fit a 2mm plate into a hole that was cut by a 1mm saw.. going to have to think about this one. softsanding doesn't work, i tried that in previous models of the dock and those models ended up in the fireplace :P

post-81583-0-44339000-1406062301_thumb.j

since i have to get up early again tomorrow and i cut my hand with the saw, i think that it is a great time to say goodnight to y'all.
i hope i can work on it tomorrow again, we'll see.
anyways, i hope you enjoy it as much as i do :D
Au revoir!

also thanks for the follow :) i am still waiting for my dad to find the time to go buy that freaking wood though   :(

Headsup(date)

allrighy, a little update on how things are going atm.

My dad told me that we can order the wood this weekend :D

Also the new screen for my phone came in the mail yesterday, so i can go fix that :)

i do still have the summer job though, which might last until school starts again, so i probably won't be able to push updates like crazy next week(s),

i also redesigned the desk (once again)

Sorry for not using renders, don't quite have the time right now

Let me know what you think!

by the way no that ancient square monitor is not a mistake, i am using a 5:4 old monitor from my dad as a second screen ;)

well that's about it for now, just wanted to let you guys know that things are starting to happen know  :D

i know things haven't gone all that smooth lately but please don't lose faith in me

Adios!

yeah i do have red sleeved cables already :)

probably going to try to design/make some sort of clips like you mentioned

Edit: I could also drill a hole in the bottom and run the cables through there, you won't see them since there's a drawer under it

Ok, let me rephrase. Have good cable management under the desk as well (Monitors & Peripheral cables)

Ah yeah that helps :P

that's also why i made that cable cutout on the side, might want to make a whole in the desk blade behind the monitor to run them through there aswell,

Looks absolutely BOSS! I might be able to start a project like this soon, but I will have to wait a while for parts, so the desk is a start. Anyway, hope it all works out for you! I am gonna follow this for now. Cause its awesome. Yeah.

Roses are red, violets are blue, computers are awesome, and so are you!

hopefully it works out a little smoother for you.

one tip i can give is don't start a thread when you can't start the build yet, or you'll get that awkward shit-i-am-a-jerk-because-i-haven't-updated-in-3-weeks-but-i-can't-do-anything-about-it-feeling, like i had :P

+ thanks for the follow :D

UPDATE TIMEE

While i was waiting for the wood, i've prepared / done as much as possible in my spare time.

First of all I bought myself a new gaming headset: CM Storm Sirus 5.1

post-81583-0-41368400-1409414720_thumb.j

€90 5.1 true surround gaming headset with a mixer. I think that says enough ;)

Also, i tried to do some modding.

I wanted to try to mod my ssd, since that can look really good, but once I took off the sticker that conveniently said "warranty void if removed", I found out that it was assembled with torx screws which i don't have a screwdriver for.

So I was.. screwed (pun intended).

Next up is my mouse. I use a trust mouse that I bought for like 10 bux at the supermarket 4 years ago, so i was like what the heck, why not?

So this is what it looks like (btw sorry for the picture quality, my camera started doing weird so i had to use my phones camera :/ ):

post-81583-0-84796500-1409415003_thumb.j

post-81583-0-10980700-1409415053_thumb.j

After taking out the battery and removing the bottom screw, i tried to pull it apart but the front wouldn't come off, so i figured there was another screw underneath the sticker, like there always is.

post-81583-0-00806300-1409415206_thumb.j

Not this time though ..

post-81583-0-42011900-1409415476_thumb.j

Out of frustration I put a lot of force into the bottom part, and it just popped right off.

Inside of the mouse

post-81583-0-44161900-1409415605_thumb.j

After taking all screws out, and taking apart the mouse wheel section, i'm left with these three parts to spray red

Also, while taking out the electronics i ripped off the cable going from the motherboard to the battery. It helped me because now i'm sure i won't spray that, but I will have to solder it (I haven't soldered before yet)

(sorry for the really bad quality here, i do have a better picture but for some reason i can't upload it)

post-81583-0-90926300-1409417075_thumb.j

mummify..

post-81583-0-17686500-1409416502_thumb.j

To the garage

post-81583-0-52409900-1409416520_thumb.j

Ready, Aim, Spray!!

post-81583-0-17378100-1409416528_thumb.j

I sprayed them 4 times, then let them dry for 18 hours.

post-81583-0-34177900-1409416752.jpg

I don't know about you but i think that wheel looks a lot better now :D

post-81583-0-92016900-1409416749.jpg

Took them back inside and put it back together

Or at least.. I tried.. due to the fast that I "accidentally" opened the mouse, i have no clue how to put it back together :/

I assume I'll have to put a lot of force into it again, but I want to solder it first.

Speaking of soldering, my dad doesn't want me to do it alone since i've never done it before, so we need to find the time to do that together.

This is the most i can do now, i'll let you know once it's finished:

post-81583-0-86250900-1409416709_thumb.j

so that's the mouse, now let me show you what i bought for the desk so far

2 Sets of drawers, these extend the furthest out of all i could get, witch is useful if your drawers are 90 cm deep ^^

post-81583-0-08735500-1409416760_thumb.j

3 Handles, so i can actually open the drawers, which is nice

post-81583-0-87469300-1409416755.jpg

2 X 2 meters + 2 stacks of these 90 degree thingies to support the desk

post-81583-0-09035300-1409416757.jpg

Aaand paint

post-81583-0-75032200-1409416722_thumb.j

Now there is something else, slightly important. It arrived Friday morning, I've been waiting for this a long time..

WOOOOOOOD :D

I can't take pictures of it because my dad is working in the garage and it's kinda hard to get everything in frame, but this is what it looks like

post-81583-0-83750700-1409418745.jpg

It's very subtle and elegant. Not that it matters because i'll paint it, but I just liked this one best.

Now there's a couple of things I want your opinion in.

First, i want to buy new, better looking fans for the 2 intakes at the front and the one outtake at the back. I'm probably going with corsair fans, but I can't really decide if i want to go with normal sp's and paint the blades red, or if i want the red led version, and maybe paint those blades red.. if you could give solid points as for why to buy the one or the other (not like "i like led version better", that isn't really helpful for me) that would be awesome :)

Also, i kinda want to paint something on my gpu. I have an MSI R9 270, and i think it's look awesome if I painted this little pushed-out part red

post-81583-0-49709600-1409419417_thumb.j

The problem is that the 270 is assembled in the following order: Fans - Heat sink - Frame i need to spray - PCB

So i need to take the heat sink off if i want to spray that frame. I don't think we have 99% alcohol laying around here and asking my parents would raise eyebrows and result in an instant no-no.

I don't actually know what i wanted to ask you anymore.. damnit brain.

So i guess that's that, maybe someone has an idea on how i can paint it?

Well that's it for now, hope you enjoyed what you saw, please let me know if you have an awesome idea or opinion :) (not awesome opinions are also welcome)

See ya!
