AMD Athlon 5350 Kabini AM1 and Asrock AM1H-ITX video review with game benchmarks

Marquee

I have been dreaming of building my own console for years. Now that the PS4 and Xbox One both use a semi-custom design APUs from AMD I have been waiting to build a truly magical  box for the living room. That day has come with the release of AMD's new desktop APU's.  The AMD Athlon 5350 has 4 jaguar cores, 128 radeon cores, 2 mb L2 cache, gigabit ethernet, USB 3.0 support, PCI-E 2.0, DDR3 up to 1600 Mhz and is only 25W TDP. Did I forget to mench this chip only cost a mind blowing $60.

The Asrock AM1H-ITX motherboard is the most feature rich motherboard to be launched along side this brand new APU. The board really sets its self a part from the competitors with some powerful features. This is one of only couple boards with PCI-E X16 slot and 8 channel audio with optical out. Also has mPCI-E, two dimm slots for RAM, motherboard header for SATA power and can even run off of a external 19V power adapter.  With features like this I can't wait to see what other builder will make with this board. The AMD Athlon 5350 and Asrock AM1H-ITX board will only set you back $100 together. Now that's a real deal!

I am going to try to build a Xbox killer with this. The idea will be to build a machine that can do 1080p med settings at 60 fps solid, and around the $400 price mark. Stay tune for update.

Will the update be in this thread or will you make another? I'm interested in how you accomplish the console killer >.<

Wow it only has a 25W tdp. That would be a good processor for a server also. And nice overview(or review) of it!

I guess I should make a build log for it. But its only going to take me a week end at max to build it. At first I was going to build a case, but my last project toke me a year and the wife didn't like that.

Nicely done review/overview.

Thanks. I am trying to make my videos shorter, to the point and engaging.

Yes the uses for something like this is endless. This can even supply then need of emerging markets like places in Africa, South America and Asia.

sorry. Already have the case and have started modding the case. Pic will be posted in the build log area once I start a new topic. Expect first update by this week end. I am still working on some tweaks that will boost the performance if needed.

Also just did the Birds 1080p mkv playback test(42 megabits per second). Its was a success with VLC player but very chopy with Divx player.

Which means Blu-ray playback has been conformed.

hmmm are you going amd or nvidia on the gpu side? Personally I would go with the r7 265 if your budget allows it because of mantle support, but anything lower I would go with a gtx 750 even though it's debatable whether or not that's as powerful as the xbox's gpu...

I've been about ready to buy one of these...but i don't know why other than i love the idea and it kicks atoms ass.

but you might be in trouble with the console killer idea, for one thing it doesnt have as many compute units (2 modules opposed to 2modules+4 compute units) and it only has a pciex4 slot with half the bandwidth of an old pcie1.0 x16 slot.

Im still tempted to buy one and bench my 7850 unfortuneatle i might be about to check out with a deal on a gtx480 to add to my graphics card collection and I only have so much cash.

what else could you do with this? minecraft servers are badly threaded (think they only use 1 core) and a quadcore is overkill for a fileserver..

You are the only who noticed the PCI-E X4 issue. Its was something that I have been worried about since I first read the spec sheet. With an un-named GPU I was able to hit 58 fps average with the bio shock benchmark using medium settings and 1080p. I am a little worried still because the Bioshock tends to run smoother then most games out there. I have some plans tonight so wont be able to bench all the games tonight but I can say it is a little more promising knowing at least one game is able to reach the goal so far.

isn t am1 capped at pcie 4x so even if there s a pcie 16x connector, you re stuck with 4x.

and can you fit a real cpu cooler on that? i see it s not regular am3 mounting holes. (just for the fun of, i know it would be overkill)

also i don t think it js rly that much cheaper than a fm2 board with the cheapest apu and it ll have a full 16x pcie

Anything I write is just a comment, take is as such, there is no guarantees associated with anything I say.

of course you can fit a proper heatsink

For the price of the 4150 you can get a AMD 5350, plus a motherbard and a cheap case. :)

I am wondering how an Intel G3240 or G1850 would stake up against this though.

A definite large performance increase over four extremely slow cores. Tho the i3-4150 is where my money would sit and it would push that GPU to its limit in pretty much any game you can throw at it. Tho you could also wait for Devils Canyon, the unlocked Pentium potentially would be the best budget processor for such a build period. I have my doubts the unlocked Pentium will exceed $90 and with it paired with a decent Z97 ITX board I imagine it could do some damage with 2 Haswell cores at 4.5 GHz+.

While I agree with you. it seems your price range for a budget processor and motherboard combo is quite a bit higher than someone looking at buying a 5350.

System CPU : Ryzen 9 5950 doing whatever PBO lets it. Motherboard : Asus B550 Wifi II RAM 80GB 3600 CL 18 2x 32GB 2x 8GB GPUs Vega 56 & Tesla M40 Corsair 4000D Storage: many and varied small (512GB-1TB) SSD + 5TB WD Green PSU 1000W EVGA GOLD

You can trust me, I'm from the Internet.

That maybe true, tho anyone who's rocking at least a R9 270X should have enough income to snag up a i3-4150. I could understand if they could only afford just the APU and the board.

Agreed unless someone just needed a really basic computer I would think they would be better off saving their pennies for a little longer.

Yeah, especially for this case. Trying to beat a console with computer hardware will be hard as the games themselves are optimized specifically for the console. So you will need higher end hardware to even compete on the scale of consoles. Tho it's not that bad in terms of cost, as with even a $200 setup of a i3-4150 and H97 motherboard will push higher frame rates in these games at their native console resolutions.

I own a G3240, i can max out most games at 1080p with an hd 7950.

I'd like to hook up something like a FX100 on it to cool it :P

$70 heatsink to cool a $65 APU is kinda pointless if you ask me. Especially once you factor in that you could of bought a i3-4150 instead.
