Are AMD FX Series Processors any good for gaming in 2018?

To start this off, I run an AMD FX-8120 @ O.C. 3.4GHz and I seem to get fairly decent framerates on many games and hasn't caused me any issues

 

Do any of you out there believe there are still good FX series processors that are worth looking into?

 

 

P.S. Not looking for Intel fan hate on this topic

I have an FX 8370 and for midrange gaming along with a 970 graphics card its fine.

If you mean upgrading your FX-8120 to another FX processor, not really. The later FX processors are a small improvement but nothing substantial.

No. If you are looking at buying parts, you are far better off looking at budget Ryzen offerings such as the Ryzen 3 1200 or 2200G instead of CPUs from the FX line up. There's no reason whatsoever to invest money in to the dead FX platform.
If you already have the parts, then as long as they are performing within your expectations and standards then it is fine. If you do already have the system, I wouldn't recommend spending any money on trying to upgrade it or even replacing components if they die (ie motherboard) - instead just put that money towards a platform upgrade to Ryzen.

The AMD FX-series will hold you back a bit -- especially 1st generation 'Bulldozer' , and when paired with higher-end GPUs.

I would recommend that you just stick with your FX-8120, and overclock it further (e.g. into the 4.4 ~ 4.6 GHz range).

Do not invest too much more into it ... and save up for an upgrade to 2000 or 3000 series Ryzen, or Intel 8000 or 9000 series.

 

I went from a FX-8350 @ 4.8/4.9 GHz to an i7-6800K.

There was some significant gains, considering I am running two R9-Fury GPUs in Crossfire.

Unless you're on a super tight budget and can pick up an 8350/70 for like $50-100 then no it's not worth it.

Let's say this, people who have used CPUs better than FX struggle to go back (unless the graphics card is slow as hell, that is).

 

By good FX processors worth taking a look, you mean buying one? Then no unless it's really cheap, in which most of that money is for satisfying your curiosity rather than actual performance gains.

As a previous owner of different i5's, i7's and a couple FX series CPU's here are my thoughts. My previous FX 6300 and 8350 years ago were great CPU's for mainstream titles. CoD, GTA IV, FarCry, Battlefield 4, War Thunder, etc. They even performed great in Windows, likely due to their 4 cores / 8 threads however, they performed extremely poor when I started to get into very cpu intensive titles such as Squad, Arma 3 and Total War so I eventually switched to an i5 6600k which granted me a significant performance boost even though it was a 4c/4t cpu.

As gaming engine's evolve they will become more cpu and graphic intensive so I think an upgrade to the AM4 platform or intel is your best bet. A Ryzen 3 would actually grant you a noticeable performance boost. I would not recommend spending any more cash on the AM3+ platform
