i5 8400 Odd temperatures

Back in June, I built a new pc for my little brother as his was getting outdated. Recently I was checking it over to see if everything was functioning all and well. While checking temps I noticed that the CPU was running at around 39-42 celsius on idle. It seems very odd that on idle it could raise such high temps, I don't know what would be causing it to do such a thing. I have the temperatures attached for all 6 cores.

motherboard's default voltages are always much higher than actually needed, if you have time just undervolt the CPU.

It depends on the CPU cooler. My old PC used to idle closer to 45c, whereas my current PC idles around 35c. Old PC used an i5 4690K with a Cryorig C7 (compact air cooler, around the same size as the Intel stock cooler, but significantly better). Current PC uses an i7 8700K @ 4.8GHz with a Corsair H100i Pro (240mm AIO liquid cooler).

 

The temps are perfectly fine. As long as full load temps are staying below 75c or so, I wouldn't worry about it at all. If you want to lower the temps some, you can try undervolting as Jurrunio suggested.

Make sure your cooler is dust free, and you may have to apply an undervolt especially if its turboing still, as this could cause easily higher temps, also consider upgrading your cooler.

Idle temperatures are usually meaningless, what's it like under actual load?

It's not too much higher under load, at least what I saw in Squad with the CPU running at 88%.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind, I just cleaned out all the dust. There wasn't much, but still worth a shot.
