I'm joining the PCMR with 1080p gaming at 60fps and some short 1080p video edits. I'd prefer to stay under $900 but if absolutely necessary I might go over. I'm in the US and I've got exactly 1 1080p 60hz monitor. I've already got a mouse and keyboard chosen, and I just want to see what you guys think. I'll be buying everything new, as this will be my first PC. Thanks!

The same budget with a far better CPU, m.2 SSD with double the storage, non-RGB RAM cause it's unnecessary, a different motherboard with good VRM cooling, and a 550W PSU cause 650W is very overkill.

That RX 580 doesn't have too great of a cooler, usually bigger is better, maybe even check ebay as they should be cheap on there now

Otherwise buy an RX 570 as I saw them floating around $160-170 it's within 10% of a 580.

Should be like $700 ish for that kind of PC, and I wouldn't expect mail in rebates to work.

I wouldn't go any lower on the graphics card and I wouldn't get a smaller PSU they can be limiting when looking at an upgrade @JM21 made a good build for your budget but if you plan on upgrading heavily in the future get a little beefier PSU.

A 550W still leaves tons of room for upgrades, you could get a 1080Ti and still be fine.

550w does not actually pull 550w its pulls mid 400's on a consistent basis. if he upgrades his cpu and gpu he could easily run into problems down the road.

Build something like this instead...

Over budget by around $48, but it is still worth it. Managed to add in a gtx 1070ti. If u wanna lower the cost, u can go with a cheaper Mobo, something like an ASRock b450 pro4 and a cheaper SSD.

Dude, my ryzen 7 2700 + 1080ti doesn't even pull 550w. It pulls around 360-390w. That's considering the overclocks that I have done. He won't be having any problems.

I don't know where you guys get these numbers from.

Yeah man, how are you estimating power draw? My system probably has pulled max 450W, that's with a GTX 1080Ti OC'd and an R7 1700 OC'd, 3x SSD's and 2x HDD's.

 

Also, that is incorrect. A power supply rated at 500W can deliver 500W of power to the system regardless of its efficiency, the efficiency tells you how much power it must draw from the wall to deliver that 500W, it does not affect its output capacity. A 500W power supply that is 90% efficient can deliver the same amount of power as one that is only 80% efficient.

Not really sure how you know the power draw of unreleased products? I've been talking about an upgrade later on down the road as I stated multiple times. I don't personally have the ability to predict power draw of components years in advance. I would personally not be comfortable with using up most of the wattage of my power supply on a regular basis. It's simply a suggestion, rarely do people with a 1080ti and a 2700x run a 500w like he suggested. I personally had a 550-watt power supply that was extremely noisy and had insane coil wine with a 1070ti and a 2700x so I upgraded to a 750w and experience none of these problems. power supplies also wear over time so if he decided to upgrade years from now it would not draw the same wattage as it once did. The thing that defines the quality of a PSU is what kinds of components are used to build the power supply. I personally prefer EVGA G2, Super flower leadex series, Corsair Rmx series, Seasonic focus plus series for mid to high end budget builds.

Not sure what kind of PSU you had used that u experienced such issues. There is a PSU tier list created by some guys. You can refer that list and pick up a good unit. I usually prefer tier 1-2 PSUs fr mid-high range builds.

I had a corsair 550w and upgraded to a 750w corsair. And as i've stated quite a bit i'm mainly referring future upgrades he will want to make years later because he's building a brand new build.Almost all professional advice i've seen suggests getting something at the very least 25% more wattage than your system draws.If you look at the link i put in the reply the recommend psu's for some amd cards are insane so it depends on his upgrade and what cpu's and gpu's use wattage wise in 2-5 years. Literally a 20$ difference between 550w and 750w not a big deal financially what so ever.

Look, CPU die sizes are shrinking. AMD is planning to release its 7nm processors maybe this year. Shrinking the process like from 14nm to 7nm does reduce power as it allows the voltage across the transistors to be reduced slightly, it also increases speed as the channel is now shorter so you can have faster switching transistors or more complex architectures running at the same speed. So, the CPUs that will be released in the near future wont draw as much power.

 

I'll give u a simple example. Do u remember the fx series cards. A fx 8350 used to draw more power when compared to something like a ryzen  1700, with ryzen 7 still crushing those fx series processors. Same goes on for GPUs. The GTX 6** cards used to draw a lot more power when compared to a gtx 1080ti.

If he gets a larger PSU his upgrade options will include all current amd and invidia cards and cpu's now and presumably in the future, he'll stress the psu FAR less, He could do sli in the future if he wanted too,he would have peace of mind and lastly he would save on his electrical bill by staying in his efficiency range all for the additional price of a Denny's dinner. I personally got a smaller psu and regretted it, this may not be everyone's experience.

I totally understand where u r coming from. Alright, a 650w PSU wont be a big hole in his pocket.

I'd recommend to get PSUs frm tier 1-2.

Lmao yeah, after reading all the replies I realize that I definitely could get a B450 wifi board. As for RAM, it just looked cool. Not my best decision.
