Want to add side fan to case, Need help!

Hello all!

 

I have a Fractal Design Meshify C Mini with a front 280mm radiator. Well when I am not using it, I have folding@home running making the whole system hit peak temperatures of about 60C for CPU and 78C for GPU. Since I am doing this pretty consistently to my computer, I was thinking about adding a side fan to my case to blow fresh air for the GPU. I care much more about performance than looks so keeping the GPU fed with fresh air would be nice.

That biggest reason for even considering this is because since I have a front radiator, I know I am pushing potentially 60C air into the case, which then only leaves a potential 18C delta over ambiant which the GPU is operating at.

 

So on that note my request for help. Does anyone know what would be the best way to going about cutting out a slot for a fan or how the cuts would be? I am completely clueless as to the subject so any help is greatly appreciated.

Why not top mount the radiator instead?

Looking at this picture you could mount the radiator at the top, so it would blow hot air right out of the case?

And then you could add a 120mm fan to the bottom for gpu intake.

And instead of cutting up your sidepanel, what about just removing the sidepanel?

The top of the case only fits a 240mm radiator and I have a 280mm radiator.

Well, the case feels very warm to the touch when I touch it after I get home from work and its typically like 70F in my apartment with the window cracked this time of year (its cool out).

I would, but I have a 280mm radiator, only fits in front.

One thing I was thinking about if this seems like a hopeless cause is to reverse the direction of the fans to push exhaust out front. An odd way of doing it, but would work to fix my problem.

Only problem is that filtering would be not as good, for dust and such.

That's due to a combination of the CPU and GPU radiating heat.  Nothing to worry about. 

 

FYI, "warm to the touch" really isn't all that warm.  If you put your hand on something that's 40°C (105°F), you'll already instinctively pull it back because it feels like you're going to burn it.  "Warm to the touch" is usually anywhere between 30 and 35°C. (85-95°F)

I would check its temperature, but alas all I have are oral thermometers. ?

Part of the problem is my MB temps reach as high as 113C, so I know there is an air temp problem.

113C right after boot? That's very high. Otherwise it could be a bad sensor.

No no no, after extended runs at max it has gone as high as 113C. Not after, boot, tis currently idling at 31 to 52C depending on the sector.

As much as this might not be ideal in terms of dust mitigation, you could always just leave the tempered glass off, and see if that affects temperatures.

Hah! That is very true. Probably could grab a big fan and just have it blow towards everything too ? Wouldn't have to worry about temps then.
